The roads from Bastogne lead to some beautiful riding. I learned why some of the best cyclists come from Belgium and luxembourg.

Just got back. I rushed home as my son has just finished his 285 day deployment at sea and my wife wanted me home for my birthday day, today.

My room for 60 euros a night with included spa, among nature, 10 min walk to town and great included breakfast. Would be a wonderful place to ride a bicycle and hike for a few days.

Leaving midmorning, I happily rolled on the famous roads to Bastogne and crossed in parallel to Route Du Lion to Waterloo.

The weaving single lane and tiny two lane roads ride from the Ardennes to Waterloo via small towns of Belgium was quite remarkable and beautiful. Open farm land, moated chateaus, and the amazing Waterloo battlefield. The Dutch army was there honoring those brave Dutch infantry and calvary involved in one of the pivotal moments in European history. (There was 32,000 mounted units in the greatest charges in history). My single mounted unit has been stellar - getting close to 60mpg taking me everywhere I would want to go.

After leaving Waterloo and riding through Northern Belgium (past the deliciously fragrant Stella Artois brewery) - I followed the footsteps of XXX Corp and rode what Is called in operation market garden parlance, Hell Road. 82 years ago this next week some of the bravest men and women of that generation gave their lives in an attempt to shorten the terrible war.

Operation Market Garden was an Alliedmilitary operation during the Second World Warfought in the Netherlands from 17 to 25 September 1944. Its objective was to create a 64 mi (103 km) salient into German territory with a bridgehead over the River Rhine, creating an Allied invasion route into northern Germany.[8] This was to be achieved by two sub-operations: Seizing nine bridges with combined U.S. and British airborne forces (Market) followed by land forces swiftly following over the bridges (Garden).

My mission was not so well hatched but way more in comfort. I found a very cute town outside Eindhoven in the forests of the low country (Eessel) to make camp before following road and finally crossing the Bridge Too Far into Arnhem. The scars of war and remembrance are all around there if you only look.

it was very cool. It showed the pageantry and style of the Napoleonic era and horse. Beautiful animals. Imagine thousands of mounted men like that there.

It was at lunch I considered my options of where to next. Some places were to visit new places I have never been or to places were I knew I could find never met friends.

    250 mile circle.

I had noticed I had some issues with my handling of the bike... the custom bracket of the pannier frame had broken loose. I used a strap to pull it together. It sort of worked for a while as i began to head to maybe meet Tom. The bike was fine in the straights or slights curves but the round-a-bouts was hard to manage as the bike liked to drift counterbalancing the weight I would try to throw into the corners. Made for more than a few white knuckles and tired shoulders from pushing the bike to sorto f track right.

I really tried but knew the smarter way was to eventually make Heidelberg to dump the bags. Yet I was not going to let it stop me from my small road explorations and wonderings even if it took me out of bee lining home

I could not help but be reminded of my own northern European Germanic heritage and the connection to the this land. In the movie Gladiator - Marcus Aurelius Antoninus' army subdues the Germanic tribes by never took away German wonder of their nature gods and the natural world connected. It is my belief that is what bound them to Rome itself as well as allowed the German adaptation of Roman gods into their shared religious pantheon.

Once the bracket was busted and made the bike difficult, it really spun me into a little resignation. I had 6 more days before I had to be on a flight home - I had the best of intentions. I even had a plan to invite you down for a night in the Spreewald.
We can save that for next year.
