Default Deckhead paint - Gloss, satin or matte..???

I get the feeling that it should be gloss but am interested in others opinions on this one.....????

The deckhead in question is on my H28 rebuild and I’m using a marine ply VJ panel.

Colour will be “Berkshire" White behind varnished Australian Scented Rosewood deck frames

***NB*** Deckhead - the underside of the deck.....the bit that you look up at when you’re laying in your bunk.....

Something that is not glossy will diffuse whatever light you have better than pure gloss, which is easier on the eyes.

OK so I was under the impression that a deckhead was part of an outer-facing deck of some sort... seems that's not the case.

Still, the idea of gloss on anything but a vehicle gives me pause - cleanability not withstanding - so I'll leave my vote for satin stand with the caveat that white's OK for a ceiling in my rooms on land so I suppose it'd be tolerable on the deckhead of any craft I might have the pleasure of spending a night under also.

    1. Deckhead
A deckhead is the underside of a deck in a ship. It bears the same relationship to a compartment on the deck below as does the ceiling to the room of a house.

    I never heard that term!
The glossier you can make em, the easier they will be to keep clean.

Deckhead= a well placed bucket on deck. I tend to think of them as just oiled. Just kidding actually.

I agree with gloss in this case.

Yes, I’m a bit surprised JB, it’s a common enough term.......what else would it be called? (Given that a ceiling on a boat is essentially the cladding against the inside of the hull)

Second what JB and Wiz said.
Reflects light around a shaded area and easier to keep clean.

I have always used, and heard , the term, the overhead, Jeff.

X2. I did my J-30 in a semigloss and it was too reflective, even in the NW. I'd think down your way a soft finish would diffuse the brighter light. 'Course, the gloss would be easier to clean, maybe.

I think that mighta thrown some too.
I always said overhead . An overhead ceiling would be slats or cloth like on a car or panels .

What are you using as a finish on the coach roof ceiling.
    Satin would be my choice.
    Condensation loves gloss.

I learned my basic seamanship in the Navy, and it was always deckhead there.

I wonder is “overhead” an Americanism? Kinda like side-walk instead of footpath, horse-back riding instead of horse riding (or just riding), undershirt instead of singlet.....where you need a bit more locational instruction to describe it....?????
