Default The ultimate authority on everything

    Wikipedia:

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlo...id=hp_opinions

    For the paywalled:

This fight over whether the United States is in a recession is striking because of the lofty status it confers on Wikipedia as an objective truth-teller. Here are people who have convinced themselves that the government is lying to them, and they turn to a collaborative encyclopedia to be assured that they are right, like settling a bar bet with the Guinness World Records or checking a proposed word in Scrabble with Merriam-Webster.

Now comes a new paper from MIT and Maynooth University in Ireland offering yet more evidence of Wikipedia’s elevated status, finding that judges routinely rely on its articles not just for background information but for core legal reasoning and specific language they use in their decisions.

    ....

In 2017, Thompson helped conduct a similar experiment involving chemistry to test whether Wikipedia “doesn’t just reflect the state of the scientific literature, it helps shape it.” Pairs of articles were created then, too — one to be published, one not. After an article on a certain chemistry topic was introduced, researchers noticed that journal articles mirrored the language and conclusions in the Wikipedia account. The academic research that was footnoted in the Wikipedia articles was found to be cited more often in subsequent academic publications, as well.

Surely you have looked up something on Wiki, about which you have expert knowledge, and been appalled at the shallowness and lack of nuance of the presentation. One is reminded of the comment that if everyone of the Athenians who condemned Socrates had been a Socrates, they would still have been a mob.

Wiki and The Bilge share a common trait. There are enough well-read, educated, specialist professionals, and enough people to pay attention that when someone, possibly anonymously, possibly with some axe to grind, shows up with an authoritative answer to something that is widely regarded as wrong and provably so, correction happens, the correct and nuanced answer is refined, and the fount of all knowlege is maintained pristine, such that none may dispute it's authority.

I dunno, maybe that's not it at all. I could be way off. I should check. Or wait, I'll just wait, and DavidG will be along shortly and we can all be settled in our collective mind about it. Or about whatever the question was. What wuz the question. Anyone? Bueller?

Wikipedia is very useful, but needs to be taken with a grain of salt - as there are definitely inaccuracies & bias.

The Bilge is remarkable as the knowledge base here is broad. I wish it were better at giving me the answers I want though...

Yes, on some very narrow subjects whose practitioners don't tend to contribute. On others, Wiki is excellent. But on broad or politicized subjects it is very good indeed. The hive mind works very well when organized. It would even spare Socrates.

See... I just KNEW this thread was about me. <G>

As far as Wikipedia - it helps, as you say, to know how it works. Understanding the mechanisms helps you judge whether you're looking at a well-developed essay, or something else... in some other stage of explication.

Surely you have left out Douglas Adams's Deep Thought that gave the answer to the meaning of life and everything?
