Default What is your favorite treatment for oar leathers?

I think I need to apply some treatment my oar leathers and would appreciate hearing about what you use to apply to leathers.

I have some nice oars that I applied leather Neatsfoot oil earlier in the season but was wondering if anyone uses something different to the collar section which has the interface with rowing collar and oar lock.

I would like to minimize any friction with the oar locks for feathering the blades during rowing.

    Any recommendations would be welcomed!

I last treated mine with Skidmore's Leather Cream because I had some...worked pretty well for me. And I like the smell But it doesn't get a lot of use these days!

Speaking generically, oil can soften leather which can contribute to stretching.
I've used Johnson paste wax and Fluid Film (lanolin spray) with success in my limited use of oar leathers.

Paste wax works great. Good reminder. My oar leathers are trashed.

I've used Brooks Proofide saddle cream with good results

    https://www.brooksengland.com/en_us/proofide.html

It's designed for leather bicycle seats. According to Brooks it contains tallow, cod oil, vegetable oil, paraffin wax, beeswax, and citronella oil. So some oils and some waxes. I've never had it cause the leather to soften so much that it stretches, either on saddles or on oars.

I just applied neatsfoot oil to mine. I haven't even rowed with it yet.

The only treatment you should be using is Oarsman Marine Tallow
You can buy direct, or through Shaw and Tenney.

Ha! I like it. Needs a slogan. “Oarsman Tallow. All the tallow, none of the pretentiousness”.

For treating the leather, I use Neatsfoot oil, but for lubrication when rowing I use plain old Vaseline. It doesn't appear to soften the leather so I can re-apply as often as I like on a long or multi-day trip. Available at any drug store.

That's the stuff I use. Warmed and rubbed in. Works for me.

Duckworks bbs also carries it; I bought a "leathering kit" from them several years ago which included the Oarsman tallow. I figure (at now 77 yrs old) that little tin of tallow will last me the rest of my life :-)

Obenauf's leather treatment is my all-time favorite for work boots. No reason it wouldn't show your oars a good time too.

Another vote for neatsfoot oil and a wipe of tallow from time to time. They do different jobs. The neatsfoot oil keeps the leather OK and the tallow (or Vaseline) lubricates.

Yesterday I rowed with the newly neatsfoot treated leathers. Smoother, not sticky in the locks.
