The pharmacies I use din Italy and Portugal were excellent, they had stuff we just don't have.
My go-to pain killer is aspirin, of course.

I take tylenol for the occasional fever. I can't do aspiran due to allergies to it. As for narcotics. I do not do them. I had Hernia Surgery a month go, I never filled the scripts.

Given the relatively recent limitations on opioid pain killers, part of the long-term plan may involve living in Mexico part time. The stuff works.
^ Tramadol doesn't do much for me, but it can take the edge off I suppose. It sends some people goofy I hear.
Anything with pseudoephedrine in it is prescription now, ever since a a couple of crooked pharmacists were caught selling it to meth cooks about a decade ago, maybe two.
Great isn't it, professional people with supposed standards working in a highly regulated but self policing professional body/job sell stuff under the table so normal people with a bad cold or flu have to go pay a doctors fee to get some nurofen plus. %^%& em.
I have some problems with my health, so I have to make serious meds such as Generic Cialis. It causes many side effects, one of which is muscle pain. So, i tried a lot of pain killers and the best for me is Ibuprofen.

Tylenol once in awhile, more lately but usually just a half dose. I have high BP and Advil raises BP so I stay away from it although it's a much better anti-inflammatory. I have used Voltaren on my knee a little it seems to work but since its similar to Advil I use it sparingly. I have some pot that a friend grew that's mostly CBD, if I take a hit before a bike ride the ride feels better. I also have beer or two at night 10% ABV. I used to stay away from anything Big Pharma but since my stroke and heart attack that has completely changed.

The European pharmacies when we were there were geat. They had stuff toi clear my sinus cold that I never heard of, but boy did it work wonderfully.
My go-to is good ol' aspirin, followed by Ibuprofen.
If I have an evening headache, I pop two Ibu and a ZZZQuill melatonin & lavender gummy and next day I am as bright and shiny as a new penny.

I am lucky. I used to get a fair number of eye aches but since the cataract surgery a few years ago that has cleared up. Most pain now days is from falls resulting from my lousy sense of balance. So far I haven't broken anything although I may have cracked a couple of ribs when I tripped on a batman and ended up in the bath tub. I don't do ladders or even step stools.
My wrists are both sore but I think that is likely related to using the keyboard so much over the past several decades.
Some pretty good drugs must have been present for you to trip on Batman![]()
Tore the sh!t out of my left meniscus two days ago. The MRI is ten days away, so hydrocodone is the go-to short term remedy, that and an appropriate elixir. I'm way too young to be hobbling about using a walker, but that's what it is. I have to report that driving a walker while stoned and drunk is a lot easier than flying a helicopter.

Ibuprofen works for me. The anti-inflammatory effect is a plus.
When I had a strenuous job (collecting winter snow samples (sometimes heavy) on skis at high altitudes, we depended on it to get a decent night's sleep (in a tent on the snow). It seemed to hold down the swelling and soreness that occurs when you overstress your body.
Many years back, a friend who ran strings of packhorses showed me how to make liniment from mountain arnica and rubbing alcohol, which he used on the sore leg joints of horses. It helped with my stiff knees, ankles, shoulders, etc, during and after strenuous work, climbs, big water paddling, etc.
Recently, I buy arnica cream from a catalog.

A usual question in the hospital is "what from 0 to 10 is your pain level"? I never knew how to answer until the right hand fingers were recently mangled by my tablesaw. Now that I know what 10 is, I can answer truthfully. I suspect that most posters here have never felt a 10 and especially a 10 that fires from so many nerve endings and wont go away. Believe me that this will change your opinions.
Tylenol is a harmless drug that is effective for many low level pains but is not in the same universe as the biggies. Oxycodone(sp) has mostly worked but has its own issues and is fairly carefully controlled and replaced by lower level drugs without as many side effects. While many caregivers urge taking pain killers more often, I may tend to wait a bit too long out of curmudgeonly stubbornness.
Buoyed by knowledge that the pain will diminish or even go mostly away, a return to a new or reduced level of woodwork is coming. Others may not be as lucky and get more tolerance than before.
'
Used to be Ibuprofen, now Tylenol.
I must disagree about the helicopter. (post #55) I quickly discarded the idea of an ambulance/first responder in favor my wife driving me to the hospital emergency 25 miles away. The only surgeon specialist in mangled hands is 50 miles away in Greenville so they flew me there in a helicopter which is far-far more comfortable and faster than the wagon. There I was rushed into surgery although was mostly out by then. From the tablesaw until being rolled out of OR was 7 hours which is unbelievably fast, probably largely due to my wife running a few lights (after checking first) and the helicopter. In my opinion, this is the most effective use of a helicopter and their expense.
I was using an occasional Ibuprofen. Then, I got scared that was unhealthy. A friend's heart doctor talked him into daily pine bark extract and L-Citrulline for blood vessel health. I tried it for awhile, seemed to have an anti inflammatory effect. Then, in the end I thought it might be bad like daily aspirin or an occasional Ibuprofen.
I don't know how I got so obsessive about avoiding over the counter remedies. Obviously, I live a soft life.
Good to see you posting again sandlapper.I hope the recovery is going well.
for emotional pain and mental anguish, any of a variety of whisky, whiskey, and/or bourbonWhat is your go to pain med?
Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.
I only take Ibuprofen for everything. Most often for the tinnitus which can get really strong sometimes.
In two months I have appointment with the ear doctor staten island and we will discuss what can be done about it.
Other than that I am a pretty healthy person and maximum can have a headache twice a year.

I have a high tolerance for pain. Dope just takes the edge off and constipation is the reward.
My wife went into a pharmacy in Oslo to get aspirin. Was told she had to have a prescription. Paracetamol was OTC however.
