Port of Toledo Wooden Boat Show, Aug. 19-21st (The Oregon Toledo, not that other one)

The Port of Toledo Wooden Boat Show is one of the Coots' favorite events. The organizers treat us real good, and there are lots of interesting boats and nice people there. Although not a Coot sponsored event, the Toledo Boat Show is a major Coot gathering, and the Oregon Coots Chapter of the Traditional Small Craft Association (TSCA ) holds its annual meeting around the campfire Saturday evening.

Toledo is a small city located on the Yaquina River, about 12 miles from its mouth, inland from Newport on the central Oregon coast. Its main industry is a large paper mill. The Port of Toledo runs a boatyard nearby, and Yaquina Boat Equipment services large fishing boats next to the port docks. The Toledo Community Boathouses, will be right in the middle of the show. The Yaquina Pacific Railroad Historical Society has a museum right next door.

Events during the show will include family boatbuilding (sponsored by the TSCA), boat rides, and a poker paddle. The crowd favorite is the cardboard boat races Saturday afternoon. The Boathouse will be loaning out sailboats, rowboats and canoes.

Although it's a Wooden Boat Show, boats made of other materials, "In the tradition of Wooden Boats", are also welcomed, and interesting boats of all sorts might be accepted -- we had a steel submarine one year! Steamboats are always welcome, whatever they're made of. It's a low-key, fun show.

We won't be able to make it this year, but I highly recommend it to anybody who can! They have a very supportive association that maintains some boats and keeps a great floating workshop going. Here are some more teasers:

We are fortunate enough to live in Toledo, and the shipyard is a first rate yard serving a lot of commercial wooden fishing boats. There is a volunteer boathouse group that provides public access to all manner of watercraft for free on Wednesdays and Sundays I believe, the Toledo Community Boat House.

The Georgia Pacific paper mill provides materials for building a cardboard boat and a race is held each year at the boat show - as seen in one of the pictures above. That's always a crowd favorite. I've even heard a rum bottle clinking and some Stan Rogers tunes up by the campfire at night.

The nearest motels are in Newport, maybe eight miles away on the main highway (where's the fun in that? The Bay Road is a nicer drive), but there is free dry camping for exhibitors in a field near the docks. Most Coots and exhibitors are in Toledo by Friday, and there will be a fish feed in the camping area that evening, with eating starting about 6:00. Bring side dishes and eating utensils and plates.

It's not too late to register to display your boat (links to forms at the sites below), but come and enjoy the show, boat or not. It'll be fun!

A real treat was watching my friend and Coast Guard legend Tom McAdams win the cardboard boat race - at 90 years old!

After two years without a Toledo Show it sure felt good to get together at a real Boat Show again! The Port had let us hold small messabouts the August weekends when we would have had a Boat Show, if not for the Dread Virus; fun, but no substitute. The comeback Show was a great success, though the number of boats displayed, and the crowds, were a bit lighter than before. But the crowd watching the cardboard boat races seemed at least as big as before, and was even more enthusiastic, and noisy, than pre-Covid.

This year we managed to get sponsorship from the TSCA for the Family Boat Building. It was a real help during a time when previous sponsors were struggling to recover from a difficult few years. I hope that this is the beginning of an ongoing relationship between the TSCA, through the Oregon Coots Chapter, and the community programs provided by the Port of Toledo.

Are you one of the Mirror sailors who've done the Salish 100, Hugh? You and your Mirror would sure be welcome at the Toledo show. tell your employer, if you've got one, and all your relatives to not plan anything the third weekend in August next year.

Hi John,
I'm not one of the Salish Mirror guys and at 74, probably won't be And my boss is my good lady who pretty much lets me schedule my own trips...unless she says otherwise. I already have it on the calendar so we'll see if I can make it stick. I was down in 2019 to show my Joel White Shearwater that I got from Richard Stover, but I'd like to try some sailing while I'm down there next
