    Default dogs in verse

    Dog

When she runs in her sleep
    eyelids twitching
legs churning sideways on the floor
    I wonder if she's chasing a squirrel
    or being chased
    by an angry farmer
    waving a rake.

    - Billy Collins, U.S. Poet Laureate

Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.

That made me remember my dog Sam one day chasing my horse. They ran around the corner out of sight and seconds later came back around the corner with the horse chasing Sam. I think both were enjoying the game.

No matter how deep my sleep
I shall hear you, and not all
the power of death can keep
    my spirit from wagging
    a grateful tail.

Another dog poem from Billy Collins:

Another Reason Why I Don't Keep A Gun In The House

The neighbors' dog will not stop barking.
He is barking the same high, rhythmic bark
that he barks every time they leave the house.
They must switch him on on their way out.

The neighbors' dog will not stop barking.
I close all the windows in the house
and put on a Beethoven symphony full blast
but I can still hear him muffled under the music,
    barking, barking, barking,

and now I can see him sitting in the orchestra,
his head raised confidently as if Beethoven
had included a part for barking dog.

When the record finally ends he is still barking,
sitting there in the oboe section barking,
his eyes fixed on the conductor who is
    entreating him with his baton

while the other musicians listen in respectful
silence to the famous barking dog solo,
that endless coda that first established
    Beethoven as an innovative genius.

    A work in progress:

The neighbor’s dog cr@ps under our deck.
She lets him run free no matter how we object.
I’d like to catch him in mid-dump
and shoot a pellet in his rump,
but then who’s to blame really?

He’s such a friendly little hound
with white and brown blotches all ‘round,
but they’ve got one of those wires
    that’s meant to require
    that he doesn’t run freely.

Still, they choose not to use it,
or the dog can elude it.
He drops loads on our lawn
    until our patience is gone,
and we plan his punishment severely.

but truly the dog's not to blame
so, cursing the neighbors by name
we decided that we would scoop
and make a bomb of his poop
to ignite on their doorstep, clearly

Not necessarily a poem, but written by a poet:Just A Dog - Baxter Black

You were just a dog. But a good dog.

Right from the start. Your loyalty was never in question. And what you didn't know, you didn't know because I never took the time to teach you.

When you were young I was harder on you. I expected you to understand the basics - and you learned them. A "bad dog" was like a whip on your back.

But when uncontrollable instinct got you in trouble, I didn't hold it against you. I doctored you up, changed your bed and remembered that reason gets left behind in the heat of passion, be it skunks, gyps or cloven hooves.

You were patient with the young, pups or kids. They pulled your hair, barked around you in circles and rode on your back. I never had to worry. They were safe with you.

I was walkin' down the street on a sunny day
    Hubba hubba hubba hubba hubba
A feeling in my bones that I'll have my way
    Hubba hubba hubba hubba hubba
Well I'm a happy boy (happy boy)
Well I'm a happy boy (happy boy)
Oh ain't it good when things are going your way, hey hey
My little dog spot got hit by a car
    Hubba hubba hubba hubba hubba
Put his guts in a box and put him in a drawer
    Hubba hubba hubba hubba hubba
Well I'm a happy boy (happy boy)
Well I'm a happy boy (happy boy)
I forgot all about it for a month and a half
    Hubba hubba hubba hubba hubba
I looked in the drawer and started to laugh
    Hubba hubba hubba hubba hubba
Well I'm a happy boy (happy boy)
Well I'm a happy boy (happy boy)

When I was a lad and Old Shep was a pup
O'er hills and meadows we'd stray
Just a boy and his dog, we both full of fun
We grew up together that way

I remember the time at the old swimmin' hole
When I would have drowned beyond doubt
Shep was right there, to the rescue he came
He jumped in and helped pull me out

So the years sped along and at last he grew old
His eyesight was fast growin' dim
Then one day, the doctor looked at me and said
"I can't do no more for him, Jim"

With a hand that was tremblin', I picked up my gun
I aimed it at Shep's faithful head
I just couldn't do it, I wanted to run
And I wished that they'd shoot me instead

I went to his side and I sat on the ground
He laid his head on my knee
I stroked the best pal that a man ever found
I cried, so I scarcely could see

Old Sheppie, he knew he was goin' to go
For he reached out and licked at my hand
He looked up at me, just as much as to say
    "We're parting, but you understand"

Now Old Shep is gone where the good doggies go
And no more with Old Shep will I roam
But if dogs have a heaven, there's one thing I know
Old Shep has a wonderful home

    Old Shep

Somewhere there's a poem about a dog that piddled everywhere- I remember the last line was 'but Rex had diabetes'.

    .
UFO LANDS NEAR BEATRICE, NEBRASKA; DOG KILLED -- The STAR

I knew if I barked hard enough at the sky
I could bring the light down to me

like the hand of my master, a warm star
descending to my fur after his long day away.

Room to room light has always followed him.
And my coarse voice, the only voice I have,

has, after all these nights in the moon-gilded dark,
called something down. Whatever rough bolus

my throat sent up is returning now, billionfold,
inconceivable. I wait for it as I've learned

to wait. I watch it bring the sky down with it,
every light spinning down to where I feel

suddenly like barking and barking and waking
every farmdog I know to see this, my tail

wagging in the impossibly bright air,
    what a night, what
