The man who used to be in charge of Conservative Party discipline in the House of Commons has praised the chancellor and health secretary for quitting Boris Johnson's cabinet.
Former Chief Whip Mark Harper tweeted:
"Tonight we have seen leadership from Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid.
"Honourable decisions made by honourable men. The Conservative Party still has so much to offer to our country. It’s time for a fresh start."

Nature abhors a vacuum, and all that. For all that vacuums appear to exist with despicable stability between the ears of a few prominent near past and present government leaders, in various places.

Is there any likelihood that Boris will be turfed by his own? It's appeared not, to date, but perhaps the wind is changing.

If not, is there any likelihood that there's a viable not-Tory alternative? In which competence is considered a virtue?

The Tory's will elect a new leader. The only way we can get a different political party is via a general election.

Good riddance to him. I can't bring to mind a British PM responsible for more destruction of the nation allegedly pledged to serve. For all that a range of PMs from before Thatcher's time have all seemed at times to vie for such a prize.

Yet in my mind Boris stands alone. Both for his unabashed caddishness (as much disdain for even a token appreciation of normative British personal virtues as he has for combs), and his ability to remake his government in his own image.

If the United Kingdom formally breaks apart in the next few years, as it very well may, it will be Boris' legacy.

Johnson means to hang on. He has appointed Nadim Zahawi as Chancellor of the Exchequer and as the rules of the Tory Party stand, he cannot be challenged for the party leadership for another year.

PMQs was excellent today. Starmer, a seasoned lawyer, took Johnson to pieces. Also aided and abetted by a few Tories. And now the Crime Minister is being skewered by the Standards and Liaison Committee, while ministers continue to flee the sinking ship. There, Johnson is waffling and even more unfocused than normal.

I think it's all over. Resignation speech from the steps of No.10 by 9pm tonight, after a visit by the grey suits - or will he Nero the role by announcing a snap GE?

The 1922 committee of Tory backbenchers has decided not to change the rules to allow a second confidence vote against Boris Johnson, the BBC has been told.
It will instead hold an election on Monday to choose its new executive.
Any rule changes would be discussed by the new executive.
Last month, Johnson survived a confidence vote by Conservative MPs. Under existing rules, he is immune from another confidence vote for a year since the last one.

The snap election looks improbable. The new 1922 Committee that will be elected on Monday will change the rules.

An interesting point - the way in which the British government, unlike the American one, works calls for large numbers of junior ministers and parliamentary secretaries all of whom must be elected MPs. So many of them are now resigning that Johnson may simply be unable to govern.
