    Default UK Government Is Disintegrating

The Chancellor Rishi Sunak and the Health Secretary, Sajid Javid, both resign from the cabinet.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid quit Boris Johnson's cabinet amid a row over the handling of misconduct claims against ex-Deputy Chief Whip Chris Pincher
Sunak says the public expect "government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously"
Javid tells the PM he can "no longer, in good conscience, continue serving in this government"

Government will survive. Boris's Tory party, less so.
Ex-chief whip praises Sunak and Javid for resigning

The man who used to be in charge of Conservative Party discipline in the House of Commons has praised the chancellor and health secretary for quitting Boris Johnson's cabinet.
Former Chief Whip Mark Harper tweeted:
"Tonight we have seen leadership from Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid.
"Honourable decisions made by honourable men. The Conservative Party still has so much to offer to our country. Itís time for a fresh start."

    True that.

Nature abhors a vacuum, and all that. For all that vacuums appear to exist with despicable stability between the ears of a few prominent near past and present government leaders, in various places.

Is there any likelihood that Boris will be turfed by his own? It's appeared not, to date, but perhaps the wind is changing.

If not, is there any likelihood that there's a viable not-Tory alternative? In which competence is considered a virtue?

Oh yes, perhaps within 6 months or less.
The Tory's will elect a new leader. The only way we can get a different political party is via a general election.

Good riddance to him. I can't bring to mind a British PM responsible for more destruction of the nation allegedly pledged to serve. For all that a range of PMs from before Thatcher's time have all seemed at times to vie for such a prize.

Yet in my mind Boris stands alone. Both for his unabashed caddishness (as much disdain for even a token appreciation of normative British personal virtues as he has for combs), and his ability to remake his government in his own image.

If the United Kingdom formally breaks apart in the next few years, as it very well may, it will be Boris' legacy.

We've seen the greased piglet in trouble before. This all depends on Tory M.P's deciding that they've a better chance of keeping their jobs after the next general election with Boris rather than without him. It's got nothing to do with what's best for the electorate (old cynic that I am).

Reports now of 10 cabinet resignations so far this evening. Boris is going to go, but seems he doesn't want to go easily

The Old Man said, “I mean to hang on
Till her canvas busts or her sticks are gone”—
Which the darned fool did, till at last
    Overboard went her mizen mast.

    Masefield quoted by Ransome.

Johnson means to hang on. He has appointed Nadim Zahawi as Chancellor of the Exchequer and as the rules of the Tory Party stand, he cannot be challenged for the party leadership for another year.

This suits me fine; I don’t want Johnson gone, I want the Tories gone.

Saw a Tory talking head say that there's an election to the executive of the party in the offing, and that it seems likely that they will shortly take steps to change the rules to allow a leadership review. Soon.

In which case, he opined that Boris may be shoved out by the time the House goes into summer recess.

    Didn't catch the name...

PMQs was excellent today. Starmer, a seasoned lawyer, took Johnson to pieces. Also aided and abetted by a few Tories. And now the Crime Minister is being skewered by the Standards and Liaison Committee, while ministers continue to flee the sinking ship. There, Johnson is waffling and even more unfocused than normal.

I think it's all over. Resignation speech from the steps of No.10 by 9pm tonight, after a visit by the grey suits - or will he Nero the role by announcing a snap GE?

Britain Trump is toast, either way.

    I think itís over.

Johnson was skewered by the Liason Committee.

There is some discussion of the possibility that Johnson will call a General Election rather than resign.

I donít think he had time to whip up a rentamob like Trump.

Michael Gove, a senior member of the cabinet, tells Boris Johnson to step down as the number of ministers resigning grows
A group of cabinet ministers, including the chief whip, transport secretary Grant Shapps and NI Secretary Brandon Lewis are about to deliver the same message, BBC News understands

Nadhim Zahawi, who only yesterday accepted the role of chancellor after Rishi Sunak resigned, is among the delegation that is set to tell Boris Johnson to resign, the BBC understands.

There are calls for the rules of the 1922 Committee of Conservative MPs to be changed to allow another confidence vote in the PM.

All this and more in Birlinn's link above.

    Just breaking..

The 1922 committee of Tory backbenchers has decided not to change the rules to allow a second confidence vote against Boris Johnson, the BBC has been told.
It will instead hold an election on Monday to choose its new executive.
Any rule changes would be discussed by the new executive.
Last month, Johnson survived a confidence vote by Conservative MPs. Under existing rules, he is immune from another confidence vote for a year since the last one.

The snap election looks improbable. The new 1922 Committee that will be elected on Monday will change the rules.

An interesting point - the way in which the British government, unlike the American one, works calls for large numbers of junior ministers and parliamentary secretaries all of whom must be elected MPs. So many of them are now resigning that Johnson may simply be unable to govern.

    Who takes his place?

    Nadine Doris?

    Gove?

    Raab?

    Petty Patel?

P.S. That brings the count of lost Chancellors to three - is this a record?

Suggestions now that the cabinet are about to threaten to resign if he doesn't.
