    Default Nice Fish

Daughter, Keira, with her personal best striped bass: 51 pounds.

Yours truly not too shabby with this 42 pounder.

In Maine, you can only keep 'em if between 28 & 35 inches. Can you keep those big ones in NY?

Nice stripers! My dad would be envious, he has't been to the Cape for stripers in a few years.

What are you doing about it?

A couple of years ago there was a news story of a 13 year old kayak fisherman who hooked a striper which then gave him a tour of the NJ coast. He finally landed it and paddled to the nearest beach. The path recorded on his iPhone totalled almost 3 miles in a huge oval shape.

Same deal. 28-35 inch slot limit for stripers in marine waters, which for regulatory purposes, is all coastal waters and the Hudson River south of the George Washington Bridge.

North of the GWB, the slot is 18-28 inches.

If fishing with bait, you must use a circle hook.

It is against federal regs to possess stripers in Federal Waters, which is three miles out.

In the ocean, just off the beach in 30 feet of water. They have been getting some nice ones in the bay, too.

This is the tail end of our big fish run. The bulk of the big ones are now east of here, in Mass and beyond. They will come back through in November.

Do people often ask you how her name is spelled? We get that all the time.

Live menhaden, locally called bunker. Its a herring of sorts, ten inches or a foot long.

28-35" is the recreational slot for all New England waters, where we fish in Maine, the Kennebeck watershed has even stricter limits and is only catch and release thru June. The guys I fish with do not use live bait and single hook lures only and release all fish.

I’m hoping for a couple of cooler days so that we can pull some brookies out of the Au Sable this weekend.
