once every few months i turn the barn radio to the country station and give it a few hours to play all the latest.

what strikes me is two things:

a) all the remotely artistic music getting airplay is by female artists.

and 2) all the male artists mention their preferred brand of alcohol in the lyrics. every song. it's incredible. there must be sponsorship money involved.

The music being marketed as Country Music has very little resemblance to the traditional roots of the genre. In my opinion, it’s more a product of the evolution that is coming out of Nashville. Personally, I wish they would come up with a new genre to put that stuff in, and get back to recording music that better fits the traditional country sound to market as “country” music. I’m not averse to some of today’s country music, I just wish they wouldn’t call it country, nor play it on the station classified as country radio. Maybe call it hick-pop and start up a new radio genre. Maybe just call it Nashville Pop and play it on those top 40 Pop radio stations.

Rock still sounds like Rock, Pop still sounds like Pop, Blues is still Blues, R&B still sounds like R&B. Bluegrass has seen some change in its lyrical dynamics, but the instrumentation and the basic framework remain largely intact even among the young bluegrass guns. Wrap and Hip Hop seems to be as true and recognizable today as it was at its startup as a popular genre. But Country Music seems to have lost its way to a much larger degree than other styles.

The dominance of country music by honky-tonk died, but the roots of country music have resurfaced. For instance, bluegrass has made a comeback and I'm grateful for that.

African American performers have made big inroads into country and done great things. Darius Rucker is good, for one, and I'll mourn the day that Willie Nelson passes.

I watched an early Ed Sullivan show the other day that had Hank Williams Jr. in his early years when he was still trying to imitate his dad and do dad’s old songs. He of course eventually rebelled against that and evolved into his own style. Things change.

When young, I listened to the rock stations. Music changed. I found country stations, and enjoyed them. They disappeared and/or the music changed.

I stopped listening to the radio, and just put all my collection on tapes; then CD's.

Well, it's a good match in style between music and visuals.

And Country Music always did have a big component of whining in it.

But that's pretty depressing..
