ever have a project that you almost finished and then it sat for years, like a ghost lurking in a dark corridor of the mind?

i had this canoe, a gift for my daughter, within 20 hours of completion 4 springs ago. then i didn't finish it for the summer season of 2018...goal line moved to the winter of '19...at which point all hell broke loose.

so, i wrapped it completely in plastic and put it on the canoe trailer, where it has been tarped ever since. meanwhile, daughter has gone from fresh college graduate to career woman. oh my aching heart.

given myself until daughter's birthday in august to find the hours to finish. maybe carve a paddle to go with it.

Decades ago I built my first glued lap boat, a Tom Hill 11'6" Charlotte canoe.
When finished, I started a second. After the garboards went on, the boat sat for years while I built other boats.
I finally trashed the project to make way for other things.

the molds are the huron from ted moores canoecraft.

i shortened it by a few inches, to use some 16' lumber i had. and reduced freeboard by 1.5", iirc. and added a touch of rocker.

planked and glassed as lightly as i could manage.

the idea was a versatile boat for solo tripping or two-up day paddling, one that my 120lb daughter can roof rack and portage on her own.

I took the easy way out and got mydaughter a Wenonah Vagabond in kevlar ultralight then added an extra layer of 4 oz s-glass on the bottom then painted over the epoxied glass below waterline w gray interlux. She sends me pics from Maine w dog and her fishing from it.

right about 40lbs.

It is likely modeled after the Quebec Native American Huron wood and canvas canoes which were known to be economically built but great paddling canoes. I restored a 20 footer once, but never got a chance to paddle it.

a sailing canoe is a thing of beauty...not in the works this time.

i did extract a sail from todd a few years ago, for my chameleon dinghy.
