What is it with all these church shootings?

Three dead from a church shooting in Alabama last night. Victims range in age from 75 to 84. The shooter is said to have been "an occasional attendee. He is 71:

I'm on the governing board of my Episcopal Church. We are talking with a parishioner who is a retired member of the Vermont State Police about "hardening" our church from attack. Can you imagine that? The need to "harden" a house of love and peace from some crazy coming in and shooting up the place?
Short of putting armed guards at all entrances (that ain't gonna happen), we are screwed if someone shows up with a gun.
