Local restaurant used to have two menus, depending on language. Local one had the dish as goat, tourists got 'lamb'.

That's pretty awful and so human... Seeing animals first and foremost as food, lacking souls put here solely for us to consume as we please. I'm not saying this not so much to criticize the habit eating animals but to criticize the celebration and trivializing of it, and finding humor in it.

I keep telling my wife we should get a goat to keep the lawn trimmed. Free fertilizer, too!

Nah. Goats will eat your bedding plants, shrubbery and hedging plants, but I don't think that they like grass.

The best lawn mower that I gave seen is a wire mesh cylinder containing some guinea pigs. They trundled around the lawn, grazing the grass down. Unfortunately, they don't like nettles, so maybe you need a goat as well.

Goats are rubbish as lawn mowers, sheep on the other hand, are pretty effective.

I could not imagine a more pleasant yard maintenance crew than a gang of whistle pigs. They may be delicious, but they’re damned charming little things.

i have never kept goats, but my other life experiences, coupled by my reading and hearing about goats as livestock, makes me think it is easier to just control your weeds by hand.

What about little carts to attach to the goats? If you had a track and enough goats, you could play Spartacus in slow motion.

I was told that my great-grandfather kept a billy goat and goat cart for making deliveries. Which was fine but for the goats' aversion to puddles. He would leap over them with the cart bouncing all over the place.

I’ve seen goat carts. I even saw a little cart with a TEAM of goats. Three in a line. With wire harnesses. Some crazy old dude up in the mountain nearby had about a bazillion goats, and when we’d ride by on our bikes, we always had to watch for loose goats.

He was a neat old dude. His little goat carts were adorable. I think he only made them for grins, though he may have used them on his farm.

i think building a cart for a goat would be great fun. Who’s getting a goat, now? Let’s discuss your cart…

    Ayup.

Until you want to keep them penned up hard against some acreage of blackberries, and don't mind waiting while they beaver away at them.

Our city has a herd of goats for weed control. A fellow pub patron was the goat herder until last year. He told me the good goats that stayed in the portable fence got to breed and bad goats got "relocated". So the herd they have now is pretty manageable.

My sister kept the goats in my photos above as pets. When she moved away, she had the people that she gave them to promise that they wouldn't be killed. I still have a goat cart here that she and my father had me build from an old bicycle cart. The cart never did get used. They did keep the blackberries and peppervine cleared out.

The local council uses goats to keep the shrubs under control on Cromer cliffs. https://www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/new...ation-grazing/

A good plan. But it definitely requires good fencing, herding, and/or breeding for non-wandering tendencies.

My son and his wife for a while had a business called Steel City Grazers, the T-shirts said "My Landscaper is a goat". It was a lot of work for the humans, mainly in setting up the electric fencing at each site and also trying to load Hobo the guard donkey into the truck. My observation is that goats like people have various personalities.

    An interesting factoid.
Some tea plantations in the Himalayan foothills use goats as gardeners.
Goats do not like the taste of the camellia leaves, but brows on anything else growing amongst the bushes.

People hate goats? Do they hate goats more than science?

I’m going to go make an omelette with chèvre and ponder these questions.

I started this thread, and I don't believe that people hate goats.

My oldest friend has a steep section in town and a goat to mow it, the stories of getting that beast in a car ( when it was younger) to go to the vet and in the back of a truck later are legendary, enough to bring tears to your eyes. And our great friends up here in ruraltopia have three rescue goats, a sheep that thinks she's a goat, and two cows. They're pets and will never be eaten.... They do some very funny things.
Anyway, the point..... I noticed and commented on the goats letterbox eyes a few years ago. They have horizontal ,rectangular pupils but get this, the whole eye rotates as they move their head so the pupils stay level. This is the eye of the hunted with the maximum width of vision and placed on the sides of their heads for the same reason. The pupil staying level while grazing means they always have their eye out for trouble of the getting eaten kind.
Small predators like cats and foxes have vertical pupils, larger predators, round.
    Pretty fun stuff thought eye.

Whew. My younger daughter had a list of “favorite barnyard animals” as a five year old which she maintains to comic effect as a twenty-five year old. Goats are perennially in her top three and she’s quite stern about it.

I remember when the parks above Berkeley got goats for shrubbery management. Fun surprise riding a trail and there was a bunch of fenced goats looking down at us.
