The chocolate box connectors I have are total crap..the screw fills about 25% of the hole, so you tighten it down but at least one wire is loose.

There must be a better way?

If possible, try to move the bottom cable a bit - the black insulation should only end inside the box.

I''m not certain how this would work in your situation, but...

    Think Wago.

The wires seem short. But as others have said: there are connectors.

At work we use crimp ferrules and the Wagos. Now I use them at home.

There appear to be four wires per cable - is this just a "T" junction in a three phase circuit? If so what voltage and current?
I'd much rather lay in my bunk all freakin day lookin at Youtube videos .

five: black, brown, gray, blue and yellow/green. the thin black thing you can see in the left cable is a rubber filler, because five round objects pack poorly.

Standard 400V (3 x 230V shifted by 120 degrees), my guess it's the thinnest from typically used: 25A per phase

Martin, check the rating of whatever you'll use. WAGO and flat screw connectors are usually properly rated, but the common orange screw connectors will usually have a lower rating than the hole size would indicate.

    Thanks for your help guys..
I ran around four shops to find the connector Miko posted but they are as rare as hen's teeth here. I did get some Wago connectors for my 3 wire 220v system (2.5mm square solid copper), and some slightly better chocolate box connectors for the 3-phase (400v rated). No Wagos that big, from memory the 3-phase cores are 12mm squared.

I got one done before beer o'clock.

Doing 8 more of them tomorrow is already making my plums ache

I'll get better at it as I go on.. no it's not on a boat. My usual boaty way is to solder and wrap, or use 3 way gooey shrinking T connectors. I'm just amazed at how crap my initial chic boxes were, and that a 400v X5 core connector isn't absolute standard fare in any builders shops, here anyway. I can't be the first one to ask for them.
