Heading out for our once a year evening at the horse races today with two of my sons. Should be great fun, but I have no expectation of winning money. I am hopeless at picking horses. Many years ago I had an interesting conversation with a professional gambler at the horse races. Happened to be sitting by him, and I could not help but notice he was placing his bets with very little effort in between races going over the racing form, so I asked him his technique. He was quite talkative. He could make a living on the horses for one reason, and one reason only, with pari-mutual betting he was competing with the likes of me. He stuck to one track during its season. Spent every early morning watching the practices and training of the horses. He knew the local trainers and jockeys, and of course the horses. He said he typically put in a good 60-80 hours a week of work. Claimed to make a good living. Just one example which he gave me: he had a pretty good idea when a horse was entered in a claiming race because it needed a race, but the owner did not really want to sell the horse. Never bet on those horses to win, perhaps a place or show, but not a win.
I always thought he was being very honest with me, and I from his description of his life, I would not want to do it. But he loved the horses, loved studying them, watching them, etc. And he figured out how to make a living off it. I asked him how many at that track did what he did, he told me less than 5.
