On the western to sci-fi thing - Star Trek was originally written as a western, but the censors wouldn't let it on TV. Roddenberry changed it to sci-fi so they couldn't claim anything referred to real people/groups.

There is, kind of. It's the movie Serenity, which finishes the storyline and features the original cast. Quite good.

... I did not understand the disrepect ladled out for Cowboy Bebop. I have seen both the manga original, and the live action series with John Cho. I liked 'em both.

I haven't seen either (well, a little of the manga...) but love the soundtrack for the manga version, by "Yoko Kanno and The Seatbelts". Great blend of a slew of styles: jazz, blues, latin, on-and-on-and on...

Some of the best animation anywhere, and a killer soundtrack. Like, really killer good jazz. An amazing show.

I didn't realize there is a live action version. Is that a recent thing?

Randall Munroe is a big Firefly fan. Probably drew up a dozens comics on it.

Never seen it, but if Randall likes it, then it must be good.

(Pretty sure half of those comics involve Summer Glau.)

Having watched all of the Firefly episodes of season one (sadly the only season), I watched the two hour movie “Serenity” last night. I was pleasantly surprised that, unlike a lot of series/movie combinations, Serenity seemed like an actual episode of the series and it did do a lot to explain the overall plot. It was good, my only complaint is that too much of it was devoted to violent. fight action scenes. I admit that some of that advances the plot, but much less of it would also serve that purpose. But that seems to be what sells movies these days I guess.
