    Even with a Seagull outboard?

Canoeyawl posted that photo of my catboat taken on the annual gunkhole trip of our Traditional Small Craft Association chapter. These trips spend a week sailing (or putt’n) on the waters of the San Joaquin - Sacramento River Delta. This photo shows the eight boats that started the trip this year.

Only half the boats are wooden and one isn’t even “traditional.” Still these trips are a celebration of the enjoyment that comes from spending time in the types of boats owned by many of the members of this forum. By the way, here is a photo of Canoeyawl’s namesake.

Here is another wooden boat in the group, taken before he was able to step his mast. Forum members may recall the thread that documented the building of this pretty little Tom Cat. Later postings will show this catboat under sail.

Finally, here is the fourth wooden boat in the group this year.

The Core Sound ketch in this photo is shown reefed on the first day that had some lively winds.

Which I’ve always thought was interesting, as it seems we are doomed to be dead for a much longer period of time. Kinda seems cruel that we have just enough intellect and awareness to be capable of grasping that reality…

What Canoeyawl didn’t mention in his post is that later that morning the Seagull on my catboat would not restart after a refueling so he towed me the rest of the morning.

In an earlier thread someone asked Canoeyawl about trailering. Here is a photo of Canoeyawl retrieving his boat from the launching ramp like it was just another sailing dinghy.

Also, earlier I promised a photo of the Tom Cat with its mast up. Morning Song joined us for the first two days of the trip. Here she is on the second day, setting out from Antioch on the San Joaquin River. Later that morning we would cross over to the Sacramento where conditions would become more exciting.

We're fortunate here, tons of sharks but as rule and unlike Australia, they don't want us. I had a 6 ft bronze whaler emerge under me a year ago when I was cleaning the prop...maybe another 6 or so feet below me. Even though brain says don't worry, other things say different. And sighting a tiger in Fiji when snorkeling didn't do much for my complexion either.
I'm enjoying the expedition, if I look on Google earth, what would be good start and destination place name? I've looked before I know, but it's a while back.

Not quite as roomy as a canoe yawl but life also is good in a 14’ catboat.

The one creature that gives me the heebs is the sea lions. They come far up into the Delta and some become very aggressive after learning to steal fish off fishing lines. For big boats with motors they are no threat, but earlier this year one followed my little boat for some distance quite close. He weighed more than me and the boat combined.

I did not know that, sea lions up there. I had a sea lion take a chip out of the gel coat on my sea kayak in Monterrey. Three of them came charging up to me as I paddled by the marina. Pretty scary.

Sea lions certainly look like they could be dangerous; however, we don't look like what they eat, which are fish. My assumption is that sea lions follow boats because they have learned that boats are a source of that preferred diet. Sea lions don't eat other sea lions or seals, so they probably do not look upon us as something to eat. LeeG's story probably is the case of the sea lions mistaking his kayak as competitor for food.

By the way, a friend of mine had the gel coat on his kayak damaged by a sea otter in Monterey Bay. The otter tried to break open a clam by hitting it against my friend's kayak.

The leopard seals of Antarctica are different animals which do eat penguins and other seals. I would be more worried about those aggressive pinnipeds if they were found in the waters where I sail.

To me the big threat from sea lions and seals is the possibility they might decide to board my boat as a resting place. Sea lions and harbor seals piled onto anchored boats is a common sight here in California. I would hate to be awaken one night with one of these massive creatures boarding my catboat with its low freeboard.
