Lumber-some good news

My benchmark for return to normal is $22 for 3/4 cdx and a buck or 2 for a 2x4.

Great news indeed. I have a large carport project underway and have a lot of lumber left to buy. Yesterday I noticed the price for an 8' 2X4 was down to $5.25 from a high of $8.79 at the Orange Box. Half-inch ACX is still over $50.00.

terry, i would be interested in hearing you experience on pricing for hardwoods and other 'non' construction lumbers?

Hardwood prices have remained relatively stable, but there's been severe supply disruptions in the import hardwood market. Domestics remain available and consistently affordable. Walnut, cherry, red and white oak, birch, hickory, rock maple, ash, all good.

Here in Pittsburgh most domestics are reasonable. The exceptions are walnut, which has been quite expensive for several years, and white oak, which has gone through the roof.

8/4 S&B white oak here is $8.00 to $9.35 depending on how it's sawn, 8/4 S&B walnut is 9.98. Those are bargain prices compared to bubinga, wenge, and zebra. The last load of Mexican bocote set me $35.00/bf. Purpleheart is still affordable at $9.00/bf if you can find it.

I went dumpster diving (with permission) and picked out about 30 92-5/8" tuba4 studs and as many or more shorter pieces for the price of pulling out the nails. Used by the prefab home setting crews as blocking. Not worth their time to re-use.

Yes. What is fueling the run up in White Oak? Is it us? Why can't they stick to their pin oaks, jack oaks, and whatever other red oaks they use in their nice dry house interiors?

Local backwoods sawmills around here are still selling green rough-cut white oak as cheap as $1. Those are going to be very rough and knotty, though. My local hardwood source is higher for KD white oak than they are for cherry and even mahogany. As for the big box stores, lumber is coming down some. 7/16 OSB is down to $24, from a high of $52. Should be around $10. 2X stock is spotty; I recently bought 2X8's for about half what they were, but 2X6's are still high. Various types of plywood are still stupid high. When i bought some 6mm BS 1088 meranti, it was only $9 a sheet more than garbage 1/4" BC at Big Orange.

Hopefully the prices will drop this side of the big puddle soon our costs are still high for all wood and plywood.
