Why - are you afraid of what it says about firearms?

Statistically, Canada is somewhere in between the UK and the USA, which seems fitting.

It therefore makes no sense to praise or condemn anyone on the grounds they are a free willed self that made one choice but could have chosen something else. There is no evidence that such a situation is possible in our Universe. Demonstrate otherwise and I will be thrilled.

We can not outlaw the mental illness that has taken hold in this country. Mass murder with gun violence is a byproduct of the deep national psychosis. Nobody is in charge; criminals, thugs and crazies do what they want including killing children in the name of notoriety, freedom and personal asserted rights. We are so fooked.

I don’t think the news coverage makes a damn bit of difference, frankly.

This country has an unhealthy relationship with firearms. It needs to change because the way we’re doing it now doesn’t work.

Hear this news, yet again, and tell me the honorable thing to do isn't to get rid of all guns, every mother-loving one of them, all of them, for hunting, for varmints and pests, for target practice and self-protection and every other plausible excuse, until we can change our culture so that no one ever has to hear this news again. I am so angry I could spit. Yes. All of you who have legitimate uses for guns should voluntarily turn them in, and everyone who has one in his or her possession should be charged with a felony. Until every school kid in America can go to school without this hanging over them. I am so sick of this. Feeling so helpless. Thoughts and prayers your ass off, but figure it out, goddamnit!

I think it is a cop-out to say all mass shooters are mentally ill. Unless you count racism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism and the like as mental illness.

    Very angry tonight.

The GOP will never support legislation to treat mental illness. It doesn't benefit rich people, corporations or anything else in their agenda, therefore it's a non-starter. They-just-don't-care.

We, society, the media, should make a point of not showing the perp's face and not repeating his name, and instead show a picture of the person's mother and use her name.

    It might make a difference.

We could start by assuring that anyone that votes republican is mentally ill

Yes. Thank you. But the media, with it's "if it bleeds, it leads" mentality will never agree.

I suppose it depends on your definition of mental illness.

The shooter shot and killed his grandmother before going to the school to kill 14 children. I think we can agree he was not well-adjusted.

No need to worry about gun control. Just wait until sanity prevails as that's sure to happen soon.

Let’s have that regulation for the public at large, shall we?

Oregon has the dubious distinction of where modern day school shootings started. A year before Columbine a 15 year old murdered his parents, went to school, shot two kids and wounded about nineteen others.

Ya know, with the Constitution and originalists, it is all about where commas are placed. Never mind that when it was written the US was mostly a frontier, agrarian society where you had to have a gun to fight off beasties of any description.

Now that the NRA and gun manufacturers have a well oiled pipeline to all legislatures (and justices) pushing a decent amendment to the amendment will be nigh on impossible. The US is all about money.

Well Bob, the white shooters do not die like black or brown shooters, so they do not go out in that blaze of glory. The popo manage to take them alive.
    You never noticed that?

Gun ownership is infringed in various ways. Reality is sorta ugly that way.

What do the words “well regulated” mean to you?

Not crazy at all. It's what should be done.
But how do you regulate crazy people, psychotic people, mentally incompetent people, raging haters?
If we figure out how to identify and segregate the dangerous mental cases from normal people progress might be made.

I imagine in a few days we will hear about the shooters prior dealings with police, violent social media posts and anti social tendencies. All the signs were there and yet nobody did anything.

My mom's visiting. She observed all the Hispanic names - the police chief, the town, the proximity to the Mexican border . And offer to bet me $100 that the shooter was white, and that the thing was racially tinged. Replacement theory again, trying to keep illegal or legal Hispanic kids from growing up and "replacing" "real" Americans.

I didn't take her bet. F#cking hell, I wish I could, and think my money would be safe.

I am here till my parents are gone. As both are in bad health, another 5 years I think. Because I was born in Spain, they make it fairly easy to immigrate there.
