Default Mast rotation on lug sail?

I have no experience with sailing a lugsail, but am building a Penobscot with plans on a lugsail rig. On most sail configurations the mast is prevented from rotating in the mast partner by rigging or incorporated in the construction.

So my question. Does the mast need to be prevented from rotating with a lugsail rig? Personal experience comments appreciated.

Agree--none of my unstayed lug rigs have ever shown a tendency for the mast to rotate. There's nothing stopping them other than friction in the step & partner.

Heel of my mast is keyed to the step. I can't really imagine it would matter one way or another since the downhaul and cleated off halyard will keep everything oriented the right way.

I should really go and build a third, even larger, lug-rigged sailboat, if only to complete the triptych. Chebacco?
