    Default which wood?

I have several wide planks about 4 ft. long of this stuff. Moderately heavy, was used as shelving, needs a little cleanup. Any idea what wood it is? (the dark spot is just a shadow.)

Long distance wood ID is a crapshoot.

If forced, I'd say some subspecies of Shorea.

My first guess was Philippine mahogany, so your assessment matches my confirmation bias. Anyhow, it gave me something to google.

We need a minimum of three views to even get close. Flat grain, side grain, and end grain. Best ever is a scratch and sniff, because nothing identifies wood better than the smell.
