On Sunday, flood waters caused two construction barges to break free and float down the Potomac River above Harpers Ferry, WV. The barges were under contract to the National Park Service for repair work on the historic C&O Canal. One barge carried an excavator and other construction equipment; some equipment fell off into the river.
The barges became stranded on two old dams built to divert water into the historic canal. One barge is a hydraulic backflow below a dam, and there is a possibility it could again start moving downstream. Recovery is expected to take several weeks.
