Seeking rough and ready workboat design.

Y'all:

Imagine a floating fishing lodge in a remote reservoir in the Pacific Northwest. Open 5 months of the year, the full-time staff in the off-season get in and out via the 'haul road.' They take an outboard skiff across the lake to get to the truck, running her up on the rocks. This boat gets loaded with building materials, totes, people, dogs, and garbage. They have access to a sawmill... and I want to build them a wooden boat; I'm retired from there. Something rough-sawn, lapstrake, finished in pine tar and left in the water all year long. A vertical bow for pushing cabins, a 25 horse hanging from the transom, some vee to the bottom, planes with two.

Any ideas?

While not exactly to your specifications, I have been drawn to Devlin's workboats. One example: https://devlinboat.com/mud-dauber-23/. He has designs both bigger and smaller.

I think they would handle the tasks you want the boat to do pretty well.

There are lots of garvey designs out there. Devlin's has the advantage of shedding splash and rain from the above waterline deck with stowage under. Just be sure the transom drains are plugable so you'll not be sinking when you really load her.

You might want to get up around 25'. 25hp seems slight but you're planning a heavy build, no planing, so 25hp can make sense especially if you can fit a different lower end to gear it down for a deeper pitch slower turning prop.

Your best option is an 18' Lund SSV. Just add some floorboards with pine tar.

Why do you want to plane? How far you going in it?
Bear in mind that a prop optimized tor pushing or towing with high thrust at low speed will not be optimized for going like the clappers on the plane.

John Gardner's 18' clammers skiff. One 25hp outboard pushes that boat right along, on plane.

John Gardner has plans for two boats I think would suit.

Wooden Boats to Build and use, pp 181 has the lines and info on the 22 foot semi dory.

Classic Small Craft You Can Buildpp 173. has lines and info on the 20 foot oyster dory ( more a skiff than dory; don't get hung up on the name)

Those are plywood,but one could be built lapstrake.

He also designed the Downeast Workboat: Made from lumber not ply. A more complex and time-consuming build.

This is the first to this design I've seen launched, at Lyme boatbuilding college. You're asking alot, and this would be too nice to treat roughly, not sure it planes, but anyway...it's traditional wood construction lapstrake inshore fishing boat with a usefull looking character. 15 - 25 horse.

I also enjoy these design briefs, and agree that something like the Lund would probably best fulfill most of the OP's criteria. But I think he wants a building project, and I like the looks of Bolger's Clam Skiff, design #15 in his Boats with an Open Mind. It's a simple skiff with plumb sides, a 1"thick bottom, and 2-1/2" shoe for running up on a beach. 18' by 5'3". It's built of plywood but solid wood seems feasible, with lapped sides? It's not a pretty thing, but appropriate for its locale and intended use.

I second the Bolger Clam Skiff!

Not a Garvey bow, but no matter. Put a few old tires on the bow or grab a mess of old rope and cover the bow with baggywrinkle.

Many have been built and they have been fitted out a great many ways.

Note that the skid in the center of the bottom is 2-1/2" thick, perfect for rocky shores.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the lumberyard skiff cuz that sounds like what the OP described in his post. He even mentions a sawmill being involved.
