God has a lot bigger issues to answer for than people catching fish. I was fishing for Murray Cod with my father and two others in the Namoi river using set lines and big crayfish for bait. The feller fishing the opposite bank pulled in a big fish caught on a hundred pound breaking strain line. In it's mouth was my still baited 8/0 hook and about a foot of eighty pound line that it had broken. Got caught, broke my line, swam about twenty feet and took another bait. Couldn't have been too traumatised. JayInOz

Nothing more disappointing than looking up in under your vehicle after launching your boat and discovering that you have a bad seal on the diff.

(Most fisher-people who practice Catch-and-Release use barbless hooks. Easier to remove and less trauma to the fish. We are also taught to wet our hands before touching the fish, so we don’t remove its protective slime)

Some friends took a Viking cruise last summer. Very disappointed that they didn't get to pillage any monasteries.

The fish still, probably, die.
The stress causes a physiological response that kills the fish.
I was doing a talk with a scientist recently who had a phd student studying catch and release of big fish, sports fishing and sharks. Almost all the fish die within 24 hours of release.
The study was started to see how catching sharks to tag them effected the shark. The tagging not so bad, most sharks recover in 24 hours, tiger sharks shake it off quickly. but the less scientific processes of game fishing stress the animals far more.
It's all fun and games until Darth Vader comes.
A friend of mine has caught the same big Murray Cod in the same waterhole every year for several years. I've released hundreds of fish in creeks and water holes where if they died they would be clearly visible within a day or so. The only fish around here that have a higher chance of dying from being caught are very small redfin perch, which often attack a lure violently and inhale treble hooks so far that you have to kill the fish to get your lure back. They are an introduced species and breed prolifically in some streams to the point that they become stunted. Big ones are bloody good eating though![]()
Gypsie maybe science degrees make them better fishermen so that their fish don't dieYou can't be a good farmer these days unless you've been to university and own a drone
Like I said before, scientists here told us that koalas were on the point of extinction and gave the number they said were left in NSW. Just where I lived I knew of three healthy koala populations that they didn't know existed. Anyway, I like fishing and will do it until I fall off me twig. Seems like everything I enjoy is immoral or illegal or fattening or bad for the planet. JayInOz
It is important to not “play” the fish too long, or they may die. For this reason heavier lines and leaders are used for Catch and Release fishing, so that the fish may be brought in quickly, to give the fish the best chance of survival. also special gel nets are available that cause less trauma. Some fish may still die, but this method of fishing has the least impact (unless you use flies with no hook)
