The wife and I drove down to the river and then walked along the roadside and gathered a bunch of wild asparagus- the third such trip in the past couple of weeks. Our favourite little spot on the river has been made unrecognisable by a series of huge floods over the last few months, so we parked the car and went for a wander. Found our new spot. High grassy riverbank behind us, about a hundred yards of pools and sand bars, a track in that nobody knows about and a place to park out of sight of the road. We sat a while and there was a big commotion in the water and then three big Asiatic carp came churning up the river from the far side of that big river oak. They were pushing and jostling- possibly mating. A few minutes later another three- we heard them coming fifty yards before they got to us. The biggest one had to be well over ten pounds. And of course they stopped to look for food at our feet and I didn't have a rod with me. Next time! The water there would have been twenty feet deep a few days ago.

Those here developing black & white film, what developer are you using? I can’t seem to find any Rodinal here in town or online. (I did find a bottle in Germany via eBay but shipping is $$$.) Probably just the latest hiccup in the supply chain. The R09 One Shot is available but I like my plain old Rodinal.

I don’t know Jay, those aren’t my home waters and I was just passing through and had camped nearby. Didn’t fish. Rarely do anymore unless for the pan. I’d guess some type of native cutthroat, although other trout species have been introduced in the area.

Didn't you bring a pan? Camping near a lake with trout rising everywhere and not fishing. That would just about kill me I have a little telescopic Shimano rod in a bag behind the seat of my truck- opens from sixteen inches to about five and a half feet. I don't use it often- but I always have the means if an opportunity presents itself. Nice photo by the way

Many years ago I hiked with a friend and his five year old son, Jake, to Rat lake near Bozeman, Montana. As we arrived a fisherman had one on the line, and there were fish rising EVERYWHERE. Jake was beside himself, because we didn't bring fishing gear, it was in the car about a mile away. He repeatedly said, 'Dad, we could be having FUN right now!' We hiked around the lake, and every few minutes he would suggest that we go back to the car and get the gear, and would emphasize, 'Oh, man, we could be having FUN right now!' One mad five year old.

To this day, I say that phrase when an opportunity presents itself that I am unprepared to undertake.

Red sky at night sailors delight.
But not so much right now.
Winds in between 40 and 60 knots at the dock.
Dragging dock mooring around the cove.
That was the fastest we sailed all day.

Nice, the first one is great. It would look good as a Cibachrome print four feet wide on a wall, drawing the viewer back into the photo. It would also look great in B&W.

What I hate about landscape photography with digital cameras, though, is that it is almost impossible to photograph a complex sky plus landscape without having areas of the photo that are totally blown out. For instance, my top photo in post no. 1212 has some blown out sky, despite that the foreground is completely black to try to avoid it (I didn't try to dodge areas in photoshop, I am not good at it; rather, I treated the entire image together). Blown out pixels are done, contain no information, and it is hard to tweak them in photoshop. One could get around this by putting the camera on a tripod, take multiple photos at different exposures, and merge them in photoshop (called HDR, high dynamic range). However, color versions of these photos, although ubiquitous now, look fake and somewhat pretentious. I haven't tried HDR B&W...hmm... Anyway, very nice.

Thanks! I am just using an iPhone 12 which I think works well. I may have to upgrade to the new iPhone for my wife.

I always enjoy seeing your pics, especially the ones with your Griffon. We had a wirehaired Griffon that we had to put down recently. They are such wonderful dogs!

There are at least five to 12 photos of the bilge’s favorite Bartender here on this here thread. I think that’s been extremely generous of me.

The wrens and finches were sitting in a row on the fence, staring down into the grass and giving alarm calls- and then this feller cruised out onto the path. First Blue Tongue of the season. He needs a feed. JayInOz
