    bonus pic of the day

a pair of juncos found a way in under a bottom corner of a barn door, nested up on a wall plate...their chick fell out this morning and has been roaming the barn while mom and dad flit and hop about. have to keep fergus and penny out until fuzzhead finishes fledging.

That was a good move putting the grille on your car.
There is nothing quite as permanent as a good temporary repair.

Thanks I like it. I'm starting a new company that will sell pre-cut self affixed variety of grills for Tesla Model 3's and Y's

I like to refer to that as riding the people mover. Sort of like at the airport. But then I talk to myself a lot when I'm out there.

let's go down, to the sunset dill

Are we as a people pro bilge paint or anti bilge paint? I can’t imagine there would be strong opinions on this.

John Kerry paints his boat’s bilge with Heinz ketchup. Little known fact. He’s definitely pro.

Okay. That’s not true. Or maybe it is. No one ever said he doesn’t do it.

Is that dill? From here it looks like wild parsnip - which is nasty stuff.

Dill umbels. Both are in the carrot family, as is parsley, parsnips, celery, and a bunch of other tasty plants. The family also includes some highly poisonous plants even nastier than wild parsnip like poison hemlock and spotted cowbane. I don’t mess with wild plants in the carrot family. In fact, now that this has come up, I’m going to take a stroll through the wet areas of my property and see what carrots might be out there.

    Thanks!

I spent about 5 hours in a tyvek suit, gloves, boots, and face covering pulling wild parsnip last week - especially fun in 90 degree weather. That was about 1/4 of it. Nasty, nasty stuff.

Geeze Garret, that sounds like a miserable job. But here’s a thing, and a thanks to you, prompted by your comment about Cowboy Baxter’s dill umbels …

On my little Ό mile foray in search of umbrelliferae today, I only found a single specimen.

    P7221127.jpg

I am no expert, but a couple characteristics of this plant have me suspecting it to be Water Hemlock, the most poisonous plant in North America.

The lateral veins in the leaflets end in the notches of the leaf margin teeth, rather than at the tips.

    P7221133.jpg

The bulb at the stem base has hollow chambers and the cut ooze was oily and yellowish. I didn’t smell it, but a foul odor would have been another clue.

    P7221137.jpg

    P7221138.jpg

I gave it a respectful burial and covered it with some debris that I will burn in the fall.

So, a hearty thank-you to you Garret with your parsnips, and to Farmer Baxter and his “sunset dill” -- ya’ll may have saved the life of a horse or donkey.

P.S. On my walkabout I came across this Robin nest in a scrubby Juniper, only 16 inches above the ground, open area all around. Seems like easy pickin's.

jeez, that dangerous? sounds like it should be illegalized. hierba mala, pero mala.

was tractoring by and saw the chance to get a snap of moose sniffing a cow parsley. he decided to eat it. cow parsley is obviously of the same family but quite edible. it does taste of carrot as the internet claims.

and no, moose wasn't born with a vestigial third ear. that just popped up today.

ETA: We had a burro gelding that had vestigial teats. They didn't just pop up in a day though.

There were so many to choose from, but I bought this little art deco t-bit. I liked all the rounded corners. No sharp edges is a good rule for little boats. It’ll go on the aft deck of my Bartender.

I’d venture the two fastener holes go forward, so when you tow Bayliners you’ll have more leverage.

For sure with the "slouch" aimed aft. I'm sure it started life straight & the wind over the years has bent it to its current relaxed shape.
