You ever practice capsize drills in your open boat? Looks like you have plenty of flotation.

Yes, I did several capsize drills last year, and will do more again once the water gets a bit warmer.

Been told I need to use up data tonight before it resets tomorrow. Tuesday we set out, finally, for our last summer of cruising. Headed north through Seymour Narrows on the last of the ebb enjoying a couple of knots of lift.

Entrance to Small Inlet, about three hours north of CR for us. Bit out of the way if you are hustling north, but we are not, as yet.

Looks like the small Anchorage at the head of the inlet is open. Sweet!

A shot of the Anchorage from the beach, this is about as bright as it got for us, until the last day.

It’s not all raindrops and gray skies. We passed a pretty boat on the way south through the Narrows.

I envy that rain picture. It would be great to have that type of rain here!

Yah, OK but I started my forestry career in SE Alaska, where it rained all the time! I loved it.

Sometimes I hear flocks of migrating birds high above the neighborhood. Yesterday, without any honking, this flight of snow geese appeared overhead in a space between the tree tops. They swirled around once and then flew off out of sight.

Sometimes I see a flock of some species with yuuge wings, herons or cranes or geese, white on top and dark on the bottom, wheeling overhead as they use thermals to gain elevation for their continued migration. They must be thousands of feet up, and are virtually invisible. The only thing you can see of them is when, as they turn in formation and flap their wings in unison, the un-marked white of their wings flashes bright in the sunlight, then, as they continue to flap and turn, the darker side faces the sun and doesn't light up reflectively, so the whole effect is of strobe-like flashes of white in a pattern in the sky. Of course, at that distance, the un-tripodded iphone can't capture much detail of a relatively small thing in motion.

    Probably American White Pelicans

Did that one on the lower right just happen to line up with a bare branch?

In A Sand County Almanac, pioneering conservationist Aldo Leopold described a migrating group of American White Pelicans this way: “Let a squadron of southbound pelicans but feel a lift of prairie breeze… and they sense at once that here is a landing in the geological past, a refuge from that most relentless of aggressors, the future. With queer antediluvian grunts they set wing, descending in majestic spirals to the welcoming wastes of a bygone age.”

When you’re on the lookout for pelicans, don’t just look at the water surface; scan the skies and you may find large flocks of these immense birds soaring inconspicuously very high up. Though they are typically found along coasts in winter, you can also find large numbers in California’s Central Valley, the Salton Sea, and the Colorado River drainage of California and Arizona.

From link that I posted. I loved A Sand County Almanac.

Looking at pelicans high overhead you can still clearly see their massive bills. I still reckon storks.

Our only white storks are Wood storks. Mahan's area isn't in their shown range, they occur mostly in southeast US and they would have black on the tails.

I just searched for an image of ‘flock of California brown pelicans at altitude,’ and got a thousand close up images of a single bird at a time, not flying overhead, and just one actual image of a flock, and the caption ID’d it as American white pelicans, and they looksimilar but not identical to my image.

I guess they are AW pelicans. Your pic is closer than what I found to look at. That one on the lower right in my pic is dragging home a giant… no it’s the twig end of a branch of my maple that missed getting cropped out.

Tks JohnB, we do strive for the quiet places. Gowland Harbour is a stopover anchorage while awaiting slack tides at Campbell River.

Wildflower pics from a walkabout today.

The Arrowleaf balsamroot sunflowers are withering, but good to see snow holding in the high country.
