    Spot the fire lookout tower:

    Correct!

On top of Prairie Reef, another remarkable reef formation in the Bob Marshall. The lookout is on my bucket list, a nine mile backpack in to a 'basecamp' on the west fork of the Sun river, along a gentle trail (which I have done many times) and then about three miles up, up (which I haven't done).

Googling images for 'Prairie Reef lookout' is a worthwhile rabbit hole.

Another Spot the Fire Lookout Puzzle!

Correct! Morrell Mountain lookout, in the southwest corner of the Bob Marshall Wilderness.

Eight am. The grizzly attack discussed in another thread occurred about three miles from where the photo was taken.

Spot the Spot Mtn. fire lookout. It’s in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness.

Photo related: Mark Moak, who has staffed the Spot Mtn. lookout the last few years and is there this year, does some terrific photography. He captures some incredible images of lightning, night skies, and of course fires from the lookout. Check out some of his work here:

    markmoak

The Indian Ridge fire is currently burning east of the lookout and some of his photos are posted on inciweb:

    Inciweb—Indian Ridge fire (scroll down)

I’ve only been about halfway up to the lookout when I was there a few years ago hunting morels. The trail climbs something like 5000 ft. in elevation over six miles.

We should do a thread on fire lookouts.

In 1955, this building was a seed barn on the Milam plantation. It is now thought that Emmett Till was murdered in it.

Be careful with Tansy. It’s been used as digestive tract wormer and as an insecticide.

Quote from a plant book I have:

"WARNING! Anything in the plant kingdom that can kill intestinal parasites can certainly cause harm to humans. Because of the toxicity of this plant [Common Tansy], the FDA prohibits the sale of tansy as a food or medicine."

Yeah, I still need to put up hay and firewood. Picking up some of the hay this afternoon.

Would that be a mud wasp nest, Jimmy?

As for eating tansy, as JP notes, what we call tansy here is fairly toxic, considered a bit dangerous to leave in pastures with horses.

I like the word, though. "Tansy". Great name for a plant.

Be a great name for a villainous character in a novel.

Liam Tansy didnt like this latest turn of events. It was soon after that the murders began.

Yes, it is a mud wasp. It seems the preferred names are potter wasps or mason wasps. I didn't really want it on my screen door. I wiped off it's first attempt but it came back and finished anyway.

Unsure, maybe? Some sort of high elevation pine. I shot that in the Yellowstone Grand Canyon.

The wasp has come back and sealed the hole in the top. Maybe they let the mud dry before risking damaging it while laying the egg inside.

When you google "spiral tree trunk Yellowstone Grand Canyon" you'll see that others have discovered what is likely the same tree trunk. No one seems to identify the tree though. But as a subject, it's a worthy exploration.
