Just to set the record strait for EVERYONE I NEVER said the girl in the doorway photo was a comparison to HCB what I did say was

Since I did happen to spend four years in a very fine art school in NYC, then post graduate work at the Copper Union Art school as well as showing in various small galleries in NYC.

I also lived with a fairly famous photographer and his assistant for five years. Additionally most of friends are professional photographers. So I kinda I know what I’m talking about and not just slinging names around for effect.

I did however NOT IN THIS THREAD , LOOK IT UP (because this is not my thread and it would be uncouth to do so in a light photo thread ) but in my Ciao thread. compare the photo of the nun crossing the street to HCB because it was in his style in every way. It wasn’t a set up shot or posed it was something I saw happenings in the moment and caught it exactly how I wanted it. Look up my remarks on that image.

    0643AC4F-71F3-4101-A49D-DAB795FDB6E5.jpg
Notice “Someone” made no positive or negative comment on this photo.
Also think about the level of someone waiting in the wings just to reuse a comment in another thread as a critique.

It is less about framing your subject and more about when to capture a scene. Here, the power lies with the photographer.

Take for instance Bresson’s image of a man jumping into a puddle gives a lot of questions and information. The photograph’s elements would not have been the same one second before or after the image was taken.

We are unsure if the puddle is shallow enough not to soak our subject thoroughly. We do know that the man is brave enough to try. He might know something we don’t. A second too early, and we would have never known if the man intended to . The same can be said of my Nun in Rome photo a second later and her stride would be different, or she would have crossed into the light and it would be less dramatic.

Have a strong vision while you shoot. Observe your environment before exposing an image. First, search for composition techniques you can use to enhance your photo. Then you can look into the viewfinder and capture the scene. This is what makes a photo in the style of
    Henri Cartier-Bresson

So it is with that in mind that I still feel that the Nun crossing the plaza in Rome is very reminiscent of Henri Cartier-Bresson

Notice “someone” never mentioned that photo but hung onto and waited in the wings to use it on a photo I never compared to HCB that my friends is the true motive and suggest they invest in a mirror, not a camera.

Was just a comment about your cropping / rotation Joe. The narrow aspect you cropped at really accentuates the door angle.

I still think it's a shame you cropped out the detail on the gargoyle, but this is better I think.

Please show me exactly where in this thread I compared anything to HCB or any great master in this is a lighthearted photo thread without criticism. Reminds me of the phrase “That those who can’t, critique”

    I’ll wait

edited to add. How come no edits or comments about the Nun in Rome photo ? Hmmmm, again invest in a mirror instead of editing my photos

Echidna. A few minutes ago- 9.30 pm. Went out to see what the dogs were carrying on about and found this little feller trying to push the gate open. I used to be able to pick them up without it hurting my hands. Either I'm getting soft or their spines are getting much sharper JayInOz

Our sauna tent at the small lake on our island, yesterday afternoon:
    20220827_184309.jpg
We used the sauna at night and took it down this morning. We're almost alone at our part of the island right now, but whatever monster lurks in the darkness shouldn't see us naked. The small jetty in the picture above, at night with sweet young wife (relative to me) sitting on it:

Our cottage is on Harφ, an island in the Stockholm archipelago. Coordinates N59°20.242', E18°53.518'.
    20220827_184030.jpg
It's situated in the outskirts of an old fisherman village. We describe our house as the one that's closest to the tractor cemetery. The fishermen/farmers in the archipelago just seem to abandon the equipment when they're done with it. The oldest tractor:

I think you nun photo is good Joe. I am not obliged to comment am I? The buildings skewing off behind her bother me though, a longer lens would have fixed that, and everything is in focus.. a bit flat, some bokeh would have helped create a sense of depth. I don't think it's fantastic, but yeah, nicely seen.

Again this is not the thread to critique and please show me exactly where in this thread I compared anything to HCB or any great master ?

You said it so you should be called upon to back it up.

I already told you, you didn't in this thread. Sheesh, why are you stuck in which thread you said it?

For what it's worth Joe, going to art school is absolutely no standard of quality and neither does having artist friends. There were more art students that graduated last year than there were actual artists in the entire Renaissance period. And the year before. And the year before that. How many Ansel Adams or Sebastiao Salgados are there in the world, and where does that leave the rest of them? Going to art school and having famous friends is not a prerequisite to making good art.

You have a good eye, I was just suggesting you do a better crop on the girl in the doorway. And perhaps be more humble about your abilities. As usual you are unable to do either take any constructive criticism nor stop thinking you are just super fantastic, and have turned this stupid exchange into a competition of who said what when so you can have some sort of win. Ill even give it to you, you've won Joe! You're the best!

Now I hope we can all get back to normal programming.

Lot of rain this summer Lee, compared to average. Meant to brace up the branches.
Standard 2" dumper rain pulled it down. Possum ain't complaining.

My last photo was from a dinner at Ivars on the north end of Lake Union, looking south toward downtown Seattle. My wife was telling a story.

I second the egg mans motion.
i motion that the first rule of the photo a day thread should be, no criticizing anybody's photographs.
Unless it's asked for by the poster

The range of lives documented in this thread is fantastic. Personal, international, quirky, inexplicable, it's ALL GOOD! It's valuable & to me it's all art. Thanks to all posters for expanding my horizons.

Ok as to beating the dead horse one one time...from many years of art talk...

"The tilted door frame imbalances what otherwise be a static composition" Why not? there ain't no stinking rules...and

I very much approve of the swing of her skirt...
