    Question Barbados now a republic

    That may be.

However how long before Barbados becomes economically enslaved to China?

China does not give away money, there are many long deeply rooted strings attached.

PS Barbados did not have a referendum on deciding to become a republic (a few ministers and the PM decided).

I wonder what the threshold is for Barbados to have to have a referendum on whatever topic?

What does Barbados have to offer (or interest) China? China is more interested in natural resources to feed the maw of its manufacturing base than anything else.

Barbados has universal medical care and a literacy rate of 99.9%. The economy is based on European and American tourism including resorts and cruise ships. Not exactly Chinese specialties.

    I don't buy that.

The USA, Britain, and France (especially France) all have interests in the region.

China can't project or sustain force that far. And as far as force projection goes. . . That's our back 40.

And as much as you might wish it, in this country, the Monroe Doctrine is a long way from dead. Or even being in hospital.

Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.

I am not sure that it was on their manifesto.

Surely changing a country to a republic statue is a major decision?

Interestingly St.Vinvent & the Grenedines and Australia and a country in the Pacific had referendums and all vote against it. Suspect that the dozen or so politicans were too afraid to have one.

I do wonder what the threshold is for 'Barbados' to have to have a referendum on whatever topic?

Found it interesting that the New 'President' is the Governor General that was appointed by the Queen. There was no election for President.

    Also
found it interesting that, in the rush to get rid of all things 'colonial' and British etc that, the new 'President' with retain that British title 'Dame'.
