    Default Old Cotton Sails

Anyone have any old COTTON sails stashed away or know someone that may have any.
They can be dingy, stained, torn etc.

My brother-in-law refurbishes pond boat models he finds for the family and uses old sails to recreate new ones for boats missing them. This would be the best Christmas present I could give him! Yes, he is better sewer than I am!!

We'd saved the old cotton sails when we switched to dacron. In the mid '60s I resurrected them to make a very cool three piece suit. The original red zig-zag seam stitching made for nice accent lines.

Washed out drafting linen was favourite for our model yachtsmen of a previous generation. It is a clean white, though, rather than grubby with age.
It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.

If you just want sail-quality cotton the easiest way to find it is to buy a set of high thread count Egyptian cotton sheets and cut them up, though they won't have that dirty antique look. Sometimes when you just need a bit of it, it tends to be the cheapest option.

spill some coffee or tea on the new cotton, wad it up, throw it in the corner for a week.....

I'd forgotten about that! It did make good sails.
