Default Marine ply suppliers, East Anglia (UK)

Who do you use? I used to buy specialist ply from Andersons of Witham, decades ago, but they are no more. Other than just ask Ridgeons I have no idea where to start looking.

They are in Bristol so perhaps a bit of a hike from you. Not sure if they deliver or not, but they do at least have an online price list.

I've used Fyne Boats and the shipping charges were quite reasonable.

There ought to be a few options.

Do enquire about delivery charges as they can be shockingly expensive for a sheet or two.I have had a well known builders merchant quite seriously proposing to charge me £15 for bringing a couple of fence panels the 200 yards to my gate.I walked back with a wheelbarrow in that case.

International Timber based in Essex import Joubert plywood. It was cheaper than Robbins last time I asked, prices will have gone up though with Covid and right now higher again with all ithe building material supply demand. 2016 it was £35 for 6mm and £75 delivery if you canít collect. Its probably going to be double that now? I recently bought some cheap plywood for some machine stand shelving and it was twice the price I used to pay. Tell us what prices you find...be interested to know. If youíre ordering alot you should get/ ask for discount 10-15% usually over single board prices. Stock might be an issue. If you can find sapeli plywood (robbins super elite) its worth at least using it for the garboard and sheerstrake for increased durability if you doing glue lap construction. If its on a drying mooring maybe to the turn of the bilge. Its heavier and harder (and stiffer) than Occume but more expensive.

Check the outer veneers are same thickness as inner when buying as it can be over sanded to get a smooth finish for house builders when you want it full thickness for epoxy gluing boats. Bryunzeel has (had?) a very good reputation but hard to find now. Only plywood with a Lloyds stamp is upto a quality, otherwise youíll have to check it personally. If you want plywood for jigs/ patterns etc the Latvian Birch ply is superb quality usually for (was) quite cheap prices. Not everyone stocks it, and buy as much all in one go to get a discount. Overbuy a bit as youíll not have to go back/ pay delivery again.

I've not used Joubert myself, only handled a sample of Occume and it looked nice. Though it's headquarters are in France, weirdly it's not distributed much in the UK. It's the standard Occume in the USA and I think CLC use Joubert in all their kits. Pretty sure most American Occume boats are Joubert and it's got a good rep, if it is still (far) cheaper than Robbins which were the go to for many years, I'd use that on the next boat. The Lloyds stamped Sapeli I used on my Shearwater came from Edens (then became Meyer then became Timbmet) when they supplied Sunseeker next door. The Timbmet website lists Bruynzeal plywood but their depots aren't East coast but do deliver. Bruynzeal always had the reputation as the best (if most expensive) though it's mainly supplying high end house building. It certainly gives you bragging rights if it's affordable! Worth a call while prices in flux. Dad salted away some sheets of 4mm Brunzeal Occume for a Welsford sailing canoe that i've inherited. It's like fine wine that stuff.

If you're comparing epoxy, I reckon MAS was the best I've ever used. The importer is up your way.

    epoxy-resins

I switched to Sicomin to avoid crystalisation that started happening with MAS FLAG resin after a few years but the MAS was more flexible after it went off which I think is quite important. Didn't smell hardly either. I think CLC is all MAS epoxy, so they must rate it too. Neither Sicomin or MAS blush provided it's not really damp/ misty/ raining out. Resin gets alot cheaper the more you buy. If you're buying alot (can't quite remeber what you decided for construction method) the big West boatbuilding C packs get epoxy alot cheaper. I don't know of other manufacturers selling in the big drums. Looks like 30kg for £389 from East Coast Fibreglass over your way. Can't remember if you decided on strip or glue lap and how much you need.

I've almost always used CFS Fibreglass Supplies (cfsnet.co.uk) for fibreglass materials, they too are a long way from East Anglia .. They're in Cornwall. But their delivery has always been very quick to the coast of Norfolk. (ECF are in South Shields)
    Just an amateur bodging away..
