Same here. We sailed on the Castle Rock flowage at Buckhorn State Park this weekend following Tom’s suggestion and it was exceptional. That part of the Wisconsin down to the Dells would be a fun place for a one-way cruise in company. Portage, anyone?

I was amazed to see the amount of negative response Roger Barnes got for making a brief personal content on global warming.

Some people were implying that because he was part of the problem he had no right to talk about it....how would it ever get talked about then??

He's put out many many lovely videos with no personal benefit (except for perhaps minor internet fame which is of dubious value) that provide a lot of pleasure to his subscribers.

Happily there were far more supportive comments and he addressed every negative one with a thoughtful reply and asked people to post scientific evidence to the contrary.

And a new boat test--I like the look of the smaller Silmaril myself:

Also a bit of footage of a Storer Viola sailing canoe in this one.

The Silmaril - longer length version looks very interesting. The bow sprit jib with the main sail balanced lug looks like it could provide better performance. Would this provide better windward pointing ability?

It might. Jib enthusiasts will say yes. I'm not a fan of jibs on small boats, but intelligent arguments for them can be made. (They just aren't likely to persuade me a jib is worth the trouble for my own uses).

I use a removable sprit and jib on my Gartside 130 with a standing/balanced lug and the increased sail definitely provides more speed. I feel it helps windward performance but I haven't actually done a series of comparative tests. Certainly it makes tacking quicker, more sure and easier. As said it's more stuff to mess with, Another halyward, sheets, a line to haul it out to the end of the sprit etc. Most of the the time that's fun. sometimes it's a PITA, If used as a balanced lug the sheets want to get hung up on the boom(This is a boomed lugsail). You have to be aware of where the jib halyard is in relation to the main setup to keep things from hanging up. This could possily be setup better on a boat that was designed that way rather than retro fitted. It sure looks cool!

Windward ability is all about waterline length/speed
(Statistically a single sail will out perform a sloop of the same size/sail area)
When I get into a real pinch I might roll up my jib and gain a weather click or two.

Yeah, I would have been pretty nervous in those conditions. And Wow, a thousand boats, most of them traditional and/or wooden at a festival. France looks like small wooden boat heaven! Roger is the best channel on youtube imho.

And an uncharacteristic tad of anger at a passing motorboat that put its wake over the bow of Avel Dro.

^^^ Yes, that got lots of attention in the comments. But perfectly understandable, I think.
