And this:
Same here. We sailed on the Castle Rock flowage at Buckhorn State Park this weekend following Tom’s suggestion and it was exceptional. That part of the Wisconsin down to the Dells would be a fun place for a one-way cruise in company. Portage, anyone?Originally Posted by DosRenshos;[URL="tel:6747720"

Dreaming of sailing in Iowa: built a Carnell Nutmeg, building a Harry Bryan Fiddlehead.
count me in for a Wisconsin messabout. Core Sound 17 in Milwaukee.
I was amazed to see the amount of negative response Roger Barnes got for making a brief personal content on global warming.
Some people were implying that because he was part of the problem he had no right to talk about it....how would it ever get talked about then??
He's put out many many lovely videos with no personal benefit (except for perhaps minor internet fame which is of dubious value) that provide a lot of pleasure to his subscribers.
Happily there were far more supportive comments and he addressed every negative one with a thoughtful reply and asked people to post scientific evidence to the contrary.
A couple more from Roger:
And a new boat test--I like the look of the smaller Silmaril myself:
Also a bit of footage of a Storer Viola sailing canoe in this one.
The Silmaril - longer length version looks very interesting. The bow sprit jib with the main sail balanced lug looks like it could provide better performance. Would this provide better windward pointing ability?
It might. Jib enthusiasts will say yes. I'm not a fan of jibs on small boats, but intelligent arguments for them can be made. (They just aren't likely to persuade me a jib is worth the trouble for my own uses).
Tom
I use a removable sprit and jib on my Gartside 130 with a standing/balanced lug and the increased sail definitely provides more speed. I feel it helps windward performance but I haven't actually done a series of comparative tests. Certainly it makes tacking quicker, more sure and easier. As said it's more stuff to mess with, Another halyward, sheets, a line to haul it out to the end of the sprit etc. Most of the the time that's fun. sometimes it's a PITA, If used as a balanced lug the sheets want to get hung up on the boom(This is a boomed lugsail). You have to be aware of where the jib halyard is in relation to the main setup to keep things from hanging up. This could possily be setup better on a boat that was designed that way rather than retro fitted. It sure looks cool!
Here is the latest one. Sculling lesson
When he threw that sheet of ice out of the water, my immediate thought was...don't fall in!

Oh boy--another video! Thanks for posting--I haven't checked for a while.

A new video from Roger--going to darkside with a Seagull instead of oars!
Tom
Another new video from Roger!
Some gnarly wind-against-tide sailing in this one...

Yeah, I would have been pretty nervous in those conditions. And Wow, a thousand boats, most of them traditional and/or wooden at a festival. France looks like small wooden boat heaven! Roger is the best channel on youtube imho.
And an uncharacteristic tad of anger at a passing motorboat that put its wake over the bow of Avel Dro.
^^^ Yes, that got lots of attention in the comments. But perfectly understandable, I think.
Tom
Some serious sailing there. Excellent video.

I've followed his videos for some time. Unburdened by excessive narrative, they serve as a meditation, of a kind. There is space for the viewer to make up one's own mind about things. They impart the peaceful quietude of an evolved, thoroughly-civilized man.
Indeed, the videos leave one more curious about the man himself than so much his adventures.
It was certainly a more edgy video. Any small sailboating in shared waters is going to fraught with those experiences.
THough it was cool to see all those boats and teh large small boat community, the crowds would make me tense and are generally what I go boating to avoid (masses of people)
Where I am I avoid the weekends as it is giant powerboat/jetski/loud party boat hell. 90% of the power boaters I encounter have no understanding of the effect of their wakes on smaller boats and or simply don't care, in their desire to get somewhere faster and louder than ever.
I hope he's still enjoying himself despite that stuff.
He had some pretty exciting sailing conditions too.
I've been up at dawn to watch a few starts of the R2AK, chaotic enough!
That Ilur of his is a remarkably competent 14.5' boat.

If you would have a good boat, be a good guy when you build her - honest, careful, patient, strong.

So many boomless standing lugs, you do not see those here. They do not appear to be performing poorly without the boom.
Not really a traditional rig in the (former) colonies, is it? But I like it a lot. It's still kind of a toss-up for me whether I like it better than a balance lug, but I lean toward "yes" on that question. I agree that there doesn't seem to be much of a performance penalty except for downwind sailing. Even then, not much.
And I like it a lot more than spritsail rigs for my uses--and I've sailed a fair amount with them, too.

Yes, I am sensing an Ilur build being my #5..................................
