    Default Roger Barnes Latest Videos

Maybe there's been a thread on Roger's work here already, but I don't remember seeing one. So I figured, since I'm always happy to see Roger release a new video, I'd start linking them here. Might be able to introduce a few people to his channel--good stuff. Dinghy cruising in a Francois Vivier "Ilur" design.

His latest episode takes him to Venice! Might get my wife to watch this one as a "travel video" (actually, Roger's videos are the only sailing videos she'll watch happily).

Lots more on his YouTube channel if you're not already aware. Enjoy!

Literally wrote the book on dinghy cruising. I love watching him and his boat. Keeps the fires alive, specially coming into winter. Good stuff.

I’ve been sharing his videos around simply to show a different side of sailing than “my wife and I live in this 40+ foot catamaran” YouTube channels.

I had a project that took me to the region 8 years ago. I worked with a local engineer from Padova who sculled a boat on the lagoon in the traditional, stand-up, facing-forward style, as spotted in one of the brief clips in this video. He said he learned the technique years ago from an 80-year-old retired waterman who had done it for a living of some sort, before all the working craft were motorized.

I lived near Venice for a number of years and spent many happy days rowing around the places he visited. I think his video captured the wonderful atmosphere of the place very well, especially Chioggia. Just a shame he missed the amazing and very rustic waterside fish restaurant at Malamocco...

Many moons ago (1971) I did a 6-week practical work stint in Mestre and really got to love Venice but had no opportunity to engage in boating there, so Roger's video really interested both me and my wife, who spent the time exploring the town and learning Italian the hard way. We watched it on the television and quite enjoyed it. Roger's videos are getting better and better.
The DCA has many fans on Facebook, too. Although it's a British thing, people from all around the world follow the Facebook group.

Tom liked that one so well he posted it twice? In post #3 and in post #9.

Roger Barnes is my favorite. His Dinghy Cruising Companion is the second sailing book I bought ... Right after Jagular Goes Everywhere. (It's true!) Now I just need to start on the boat.

Anyone who enjoys Roger Barnes' films may well enjoy Paul's videos "Sailing Kate Louise", a Stornaway 18 which he sails around Sydney and its environs. There's overnight camping and some questionable culinary segments as well.

There are a fair few nods in the direction of Roger Barnes in Paul's videos.
Kate Louise is a lovely little boat.

I've subscribed to that one. Enrico Franconi's videos of cruising in a Goat Island Skiff in Italy and France are also interesting.

My channel https://www.youtube.com/user/ger1ger . Unfortunately almost all my co-sailers had plastic boats .

Always enjoy Roger's videos. I've managed to find the vest he wears https://www.coastwatersports.com/bal...d-p-15963.html
I know it isn't USCG approved but that doesn't mean it isn't good (I remember the debates over US DOT approved motorcycle helmets versus EC) may have to try ordering one.

I was very happy to see Roger back at it wih his videos. His editing style is quite satisfying to me for some reason. Snippets of the experience and then a voice-over with the chart to show what they were doing at the time.

And this time he uses that great Opinel pocket knife of his as the pointer on the chart! (I might need to get one of those for my little boat when it splashes.)

I'm a big fan of Roger and his style of video too. I already liked British accents, but I really like the way he speaks slowly doing the voice-overs, and we still hear the sounds surrounding his boat at the same time. I also like that he tells about what he is eating/preparing (as other dinghy cruisers seem to do too), and also when he gets philosophical.

I re-watch his vids often, or should I say listen to them, as I drive.

    And:

So interesting to see his videos, where there are groups of dinghy cruisers (including women), and lots of wooden boats around. On the Great Lakes, I usually feel like the only one out there doing this stuff. I can count the number of small wooden boats out camp cruising in my waters on the thumbs of one hand--and that's just when I manage to drag my brother along.

OK, I did run into a half-dozen small wooden boats in Killarney once, when Howard Rice was leading a group cruise there. But really, that's it.

We’ll have to remedy that when you’re back. I know at least a few folks who might be convinced to have a Wisconsin mess about in wooden boats. And I’ll try to convince a few more to build sail and oar boats before next summer.

That would be great, really. Now that I think about it, there was a very informal "race" at the Turtle-Flambeau some years back, with maybe 5-6 small boats sailing around Big Island (around a 10-mile circle). My brother and I were there in our boats and watched them go sailing by, too far away to join in.

Those flowages would be great for a messabout for people who don't mind rustic camping. The group campsites are reservable, so a messabout organizer could grab a campsite and people would be guaranteed a spot to camp so everyone wouldn't have to find their own. That would be a good way of keeping everyone together.

Then depending on morning winds, people could choose a route for the day and return. I've even thought some kind of "follow-the-clues" treasure map/puzzle race would be a blast. Or maybe just award points per # of destinations reached that day (proven with a photo if need be), with more points given for destinations that look harder to reach that day.

Or just everyone show up and do whatever they want during the day--alone, together, whatever. Could be lots of fun.

Well, you could do that. But I wouldn't use GPS for my version. I was thinking more clues/puzzles you'd have to solve to know where to go next, OR a race that required a certain # of miles to be traveled, with bonus points along the way for stopping at specific locations marked on the chart--the harder to get to, the more points for that location. Or something.

To be honest, I'm probably too lazy to put something like that together. But I could imagine it being fun. The typical messabout crowd--at least in the Midwest--tends to be less about sailing, though, and more about walking up and down the beach looking at each others' boats and talking.

Not having engaged in it myself I didn't realize Geocaching revolved around the use of GPS. I always thought it was more of a "follow the clues" scavenger hunt. Learned something new today!

I get the impression (not having attended any messabouts or raids) that in the US, there isn’t as much interest in competing or racing as much as just having an enjoyable time and going somewhere new. Which is good, because the whole yacht club life is keeping up with the Joneses (or buying a bigger boat than the Joneses) and racing everything from dinghies to larger boats with a book of rules. As a naturally non-competitive person, that doesn’t interest me at all.

I have enjoyed going to messabouts and other miscellaneous sail gatherings more than I did working the race committee boat and racing with a local yacht club. The messabouts I have been at all included sailing but they were more puttering around near the camp site rather than an extended day of sailing to other destinations.

Yes, that's certainly the standard model of "messabout." I enjoy meeting people at those events, but always feel cheated that there's never enough sailing to suit me.

I guess what I'm describing wouldn't really be a "messabout." Wouldn't really be a "raid" either. But I think it could be a fun way to bring together a bunch of people who wanted to be out sailing all day, and have some kind of dinner/campfire together in the evenings. I'd like something like that, but I may be a rather minority viewpoint in my eagerness to spend long hours aboard my boat sailing, I think.

I helped organize a get together this summer on Grand Traverse Bay. Only four boats, but still fun. We put in about 13 statute miles, first out to an island then into a bay, and then back to the launch. It seemed about the right about of sailing and socializing.
