Default how do you sharpen scissors.

I understand the basics of scissors shearing but not being sharp, but I have a good pair of stainless Singer dressmaker's shears which have simply lost their edge . my personal acid test is cutting fine soft slightly damp Jap tissue. anything like watercolour paper or crisp cloth, still good, but on silk or even synthetic cloth which is fine and soft, there's a blunt spot where they chomp and chew the cut. ideas please, ??

I do it byt taking the scissors apart and smoothing the beveled edges so that cutting parts have no dings. Then I reassemble and adjust the pivot screw.

Open the scissors as far as you can. Shove a mill bastard between the blades, roughly matching the bevel of the scissors' blades. Try cutting the file while you pull it toward the end of the scissors. Rinse and repeat.

If these are tailoring scissors used for their designed purpose, take them to a specialist to have them sharpened. Without appropriate jigs you just won't achieve the edge that they can. If, however, they are for general or workshop use, then sharpen them according to the same principle you sharpen anything else: work the bevel with increasingly fine abrasives (diamond plates, sandpaper-on-glass, Japanese waterstones, oilstones...whatever) until you feel a continuous burr on the flat side. Then do the most minimal clean up of the flat side you can do on the finest of your abrasives, pushing any remaining burr back onto the bevel. Strop on leather using a stropping compound, Brasso, T Cut, or toothpaste (yep, works a treat).
