Another Hartley TS16 restore.

With the retirement of Redwing another boat was needed, and a downsized one at that. I've always liked the Hartley TS16, and in fact my original plan was to build one.
Anyway I bought one.

It involved a road trip to somewhere substantially colder, but it was fun, and it was nice to get away for a day or two. Also I got to meet JayinOz.
Once home it was a matter of reorganisng the shed to fit the new boat.

And there it sat for a couple of weeks.
I did manage a few hours removing all the cabin sole and bunk panels and vacuuming out the hull inside the cabin.

And I did find the partial remains of a previous owner.

Which brings us to today.

Today was follow the rot and see where we end up. I started on the port quarter of the cockpit seat as I knew it was dodgy.

So a bit of digging showed it was in to the beamshelf and a section of topside but it's reasonably small.

So I set the power saw to a depth of 6mm and removed a good sized section of cockpit seat. Hammer and chisel removed the bits over framing.
Judging by the fact recorcinol was used in the original construction I would say it was constructed sometime in the 60s or early 70s.

So, topside, I won't know how bad till I strip the paint back but I will probably replace the whole section from the transom forard to the buttstrap.

Moving on the the outboard well and the transom uncovered another fairly big area of rot, but not in the framing.

As for the transom, I had hoped a patch would work, but I'm thinking it may be smarter to replace both layers of the transom ply.

Yeah, but done properly this time. There's no rush, no hardstand fees or time limit.

If you remove and replace the transom make sure that the hull is secured.
Have heard of problems with hull springing out wide and it is tough job to pull it back into shape and ensure the hull is correct.

I feel really bad now- it looks awful! I'm sure there was no rot in the transom when it was painted, so I'm thinking that has happened while it's been sat in the shed over several years- rain and leaves sat in there wet. And that captains cap was in good shape when the rats stole it! JayInOz

Hartley transoms are quite strongly framed, and this one is sound. All I need to do is strip the ply off and replace it.

The outboard bracket on Redwing is quite heavy. I'm going to stick with clamping it to the transom.

It looks worse than it is. Ply is easy to replace and the bit of rotted framing is quite small. The transom ply is damp and the dirt in the bilges was damp as well...it kills plywood quite fast once it gets going.

If only I'd known you were willing to sell it. I picked up a 1977 Suzuki 4.5hp long leg for $50 and apart from needing a proper carburetor clean it seems to run quite well.
As for the holes, well I plan to widen the forward end of the cockpit seats so the ply is getting replaced anyway.

Made some good progress today with the removal of most of the rot.
Starting with the port side cockpit seat, and then the transom ply.

The ply came off without too much drama via the use of chisels and wooden wedges.

Once the transom ply was off I removed a section of top side ply from the port quarter.

So, end of day the next step is a sheet of marine ply and a decent amount of paint stripping.

The wide transom board has some patches of rot which I am hoping I can patch rather than replace the whole board.

A small but fiddly bit of progress today. I would have achieved more but the windy conditions brought down a dead tree over the driveway. The upside of that is it's very dry timber and burns beautifully.
I decided to tackle the port quarter topside repair, which meant cutting out the rotten section of beamshelf and ripping some replacement timber. Being such small scantlings this was easy to do.
It looks like crap but the timber is solid...well as solid as old Douglas fir can be. First though, some dodgy joinery.

I won't call them scarfs but I bevelled the ends and overlapped the joins for strength.

I bought a sheet of 6mm marine ply today, and was told I may not be able to buy any more till October. Seems supplies of a lot of things are getting harder to get.

One nice new sheet of 6mm ply, and I should get the port quarter topside plank plus both layers of the transom and still have some small bits left over.

The next job was to see just how bad the rot was in the transom framing...it was pretty ugly.

But some careful cutting with jigsaw and powersaw gave me something workable. The dry fit result turned out quite well.

It might be a bit too far out of your way Gary, but if you are still after some decent marine ply at a decent price I’ve just bought a few sheets from this guy in Nerang and, although they are only BS standard and not AS/NZS they seem to be quite good quality and are also the best priced that I have found. Good faces and, from what I can see so far, no dodgy voids in the laminates.

Certainly good to see you helping another Hartley extend it's life Gary! I'll be keeping an eye on your progress.

With regard to wood prices, ply and lumber prices are still bumping the ceiling around here. But I was a bit shocked when I found out that the PT 4X4 fence posts that I needed had dropped $2 each the day before I bought them.
