Hello, I am researching contruction methods, techniques and materials of small fishing boats that would have been used in western Europe on inland lakes and rivers or inshore saltwater during the late 1800's to early 1900's (pre-WW1).

I would appreciate greatly any suggestions as to books, web-sites or other material that might help me with this.

    Kindest regards,

    Ric

List of the principal records of British shipping and seamen, showing their present locations

The British mercantile marine has been regulated by the state from an early date. Since 1873, the General Register and Record Office of Shipping and Seamen has maintained the registration of seafarers and of vessels. The majority of the records of the Registrar General of Shipping and Seamen, which are selected for permanent retention, are transferred to the British Public Record Office, but some of the record series are in other repositories. The list below provides a brief description of the major record series. The list is organized in series. Bernard Cadoret, et al, published (in French) an encyclopedic three-volume history of the fishing boats of France, largely Brittany, called Ar Vag which is still in print and available through the web site for Le Chasse-Marée, <www.chasse-maree.com>. Other books in their catalog may apply.

Off the top of my head, here are several books that may be useful: Working Boats of Britain: Their Shape and Purpose, , Eric McKee. London: Conway. Inshore Craft of Norway, Arne Christensen, London: Conway. No doubt there are many others.
