    Default long lasting paint job

For wood that will spend it life outdoors, what methods/products will provide the longest life for the wood and for painted appearance?
Maybe saturate it with linseed oil or tung oil.
Should I use primer like, Kilz, epoxy, shellac, or maybe NO primer.
Topcoat with acrylic or oil based paint. Maybe paint the topcoat with varnish, lacquer.
I've read that acrylic is supposed to be very good, but I don't think boats are ever painted with acrylic.
