Default Universal Utility Four diesel engine

    Hello everyone,

A little off topic but I'm researching the Universal Utility Four marine diesel engine from the 1940s and am wondering if there are any engine enthusiasts here that might point me towards photos / specifications. These engines were very common in those days but there is very little online today.

    Thanks in advance,
    Michael

You might try over at oldmarineengine.com. I would have guessed/thought the Utility four was a flathead four gasoline engine, .... Learn something new every day. Do you have a picture?
    I have a couple of older "Universals". A 1923 model C1 and a later '40's model BN.

here's a current ebay listing that describes the Utility as a 1940s 25HP four cylinder gas engine.
..mentions they were used in WWII era lifeboats, i wonder if that's accurate ?

comes with a nice original manual too !

is that a PTO shaft on the gearbox ? maybe for a pump ? maybe for the large shift lever

love the dashboard on this one:
not sure how, but apparently reconfigured as a sawmill.. seems risky...

OK, I am feeling pretty dumb because this is clearly not a diesel! I will see if I can edit my post title. Coelcanth ... where did you find those photos? Any more from that engine?

OK. I feel better that it's been determined to be gas. When I was a kid my dad had a 26' sloop with a Universal 4. I don't have pictures, but I do have memories of cleaning out the gascolator 5 times a day until he put in a new, non-rusty, gas tank. I also remember using a rope wound around the prop shaft coupling & then up to the boom for starting, as the compression was so bad the electric starter wouldn't get it spinning fast enough to build up enough compression. Once the engine was warmed up, the starter would restart it.

We didn't have a lot of money, but we had a boat!

the green engine photos are from an online auction site.. there's ten or so more photos.
that one was sold in park rapids, minnesota seven years ago for $60.
