There is a ropewalk not far from where I live that makes both laid and braided ropes, the machine that makes up the laid rope is fascinating, but the ones that do multiplat and braided cover are mind blowing, especially at speed. I talked to a woman who threads them up, she says its all very simple once you get the basic principles down, but in action they're a mind maze.
