Well done - that first sail is always both nervous and exciting. And yes I'd replace the hoist for the main to either a sheave or a block - Classic Boat Supplies make neat round sleeve fittings to go on the top of masts - very useful for hanging halyards and topping lifts etc. from.

Nice boat that Calendar Islands Yawl- I am building my first yawl so I will be on a steep mizzen learning curve as they are new to me!

    Regards Neil

    Congrats Dale - well deserved.

I find masthead blocks don't create a lead I like on halyards so have always used these masthead fairleads - they also allow yard to get up higher and tighter to masthead. Which one did you buy? There are nicer, smoother ones, too. The ratcheting technique to get the yard all the way up is useful to learn.

A very satisfying day ,no doubt.Looking good and maybe next time you will be lucky enough to have a more useful wind for sailing.

Thanks! Yep. Four days last week. Back at it today. Who wants to do that nasty work on your birthday? Was the perfect day for first launch.

Indeed very satisfying! Really didn’t want a whole lot of wind first outing. Got a few bugs to work out, get some light wind experience and then I’ll maybe push her a bit. This boat should be a lot of fun.

    WRAP UP:

I thought I would do a wrap up post on my CIY16.

I kept a log on time and expenses. I was trying to build this as inexpensively as possible without sacrificing essential quality necessary for use as an occasional recreational sail/oar boat.

TIME: I logged about 650 hours spread over 20 months. This does not count shopping time nor time I spent documenting the build. Those two tasks required a good bit of time in addition.

COST: I accounted for $3700 in expenses. This includes plans, strongback, boat, hardware, rigging, sails, oars and trailer. This excludes a few tools I bought and items I received as Christmas/birthday/Father's Day gifts (yes, I put boat stuff on my wish lists - these items off the top of my head may have added several hundred dollars worth of expenses so maybe round up to $4k)

I took her out for a second outing 3 weeks ago. While I was out, I went to sit down on the middle seat and missed it! How did I do that? Don't ask. Just careless I guess. Anyway, I hit my back on the seat pretty hard. I was able to stay out for a couple hours. Upon returning to the house and in the process my muscles cooling off and tightening up, as I was backing my boat into the yard, something popped in my back. My back froze up immediatley. Dr. said a slipped disc. A subsequent MRI revealed no "substantial protrusion". Good news. After 2 weeks of prednisone and muscle relaxers, my back is getting better and I expect to be back on the water soon.

That is one beautiful photo. Just perfect.

May your back continue to heal.
May you get back on the water soon.
May this be your last run-in with sailing gremlins.

Boat looks great! Glad your back is mending - as we age our back gets arthritic too and the facets get bigger and can shift with extreme rotation and/or bending - My advice is to use your mirrors to back instead of turning body around if that's what you were doing when it happened.

Good advice! That's exactly what I was doing. I had backed in most of the way using the mirrors and was turning to watch those last few feet when - POP! Something went and I'm assuming it was the disc. I have no doubt that the crash and subsequent bruising and tightening of the muscles contributed greatly. I promise I will learn to depend on those mirrors more than ever!

    Quick update.

First, I'm back on the water after suffering a herniated disc. The 4-6 weeks normal healing time turned out to be just about right. I gave it some extra time and did some light duty things around the house to see how it would do and so far so good. I took the boat out Wednesday and did fine. Very grateful!

Second, I made one mod on the boat. The mainsail was very hard to raise with just a fairlead at the mast head, so I lashed a block to the fairlead. I was eager to see what kind of a difference it would make, and was I pleased! 1000x's easier to raise. I've been told that there are better quality fairleads but I can't imagine it making that much difference. Anyway, I recommend the block.

The wind failed to show up on my outing but I got to practice my rowing. It takes some effort so I'll have to condition myself a bit for any extended outings. Looking forward to some good times!
