    Default Pinky Schooner Spars

    Hello Folks.
    The question, sans background:
Where, within a round hollow gaff-rigged keel-stepped foremast, should the mast be solid?
From the base through the deck -- how far?
    At the hounds?
    At the gaff jaws?

Thanks in advance for the help!
    Michael

    The background if needed:
The build is a Prospect Marsh Pinky Schooner, started 650 years ago in 2005. Just finished trimming out the cockpit, now turning to the rig. Through the generosity of shipwrights in Wickford, RI, I have a used sitka spar to become the foremast. It is too long and too wide, but the top 3/4 works out in both length and diameter. It has been deconstructed by slight wedges in all the seams and all the scarphs but one. By just using the top 3/4, it would end up being hollow nearly 90% of its length (top 10% solid). It was two halves, hollowed out and glued together; within each of those halves is a scarph or two.
And because someone usually asks, but posting pics here is not for me, you can see a few photos of the build (but not yet the spar) on the facebook page "Schooner Cormorant"

My gut tells me 10%. At the partners 3' above and below, and at the hounds the same, and yes, cover the jaws.

Others will chime in with more official information im sure.

Just make sure the change is gradual so as not to create a hard point which becomes a stress point.
