Land mass 824,225 km, about three times the area of Arizona, population 2.5 million. Semi-arid mostly, but has deserts, jungles, mountains, rivers, salt pans, and big, big skies. 13 different tribes, each with their own language, culture, history and psychology. I drove 11,000 km, about 6000 of which were off road, in a 1.4 Polo, trashed it. 7000 photos later I'd thought I'd share some with you. I was hoping to make several films as I also have thousands of clips, but that will have to wait, I have technical issues. So in no particular order, here are some of the most interesting. I've done no PP apart from blotting out the odd dust spot, and minor cropping. All shot on a 50mm f/1.8 and a 14-30mm f/4.

It was a trip of two halves, before the rains, and after the rains, which came early January. Most track roads are remarkably well kept and graded at least once a year. You have to constantly keep your focus, as there are animals, rocks and ruts that will leave you to die in the heat, unless you are lucky and someone comes along that is willing to help. Never drive at night. Many track roads are corrugated from harmonics set up by the suspension, which tends to shake the vehicle to bits; imagine several thousand miles of it, I think I left a kidney around Epupa Falls....but you can get up to 60 miles an hour on most roads. The car was astonishing all things considered, like getting it stuck in a rising river bed one time.

It was 35 - 40c most days, sometimes busting 50. But DRY like you would not believe.. never sweating, wonderful. No siestas, impossible. The most surprising thing was the light, which is searing white; there is no moisture in the atmosphere there to scatter the suns rays. The sun, along with everything else, will kill you if it can.

This thread is not in any particular order, I simply can not sum up my journey, there's simply too much to put down. I decided pending film publishing to post a photographic interest thread, based on landscapes, people, animals and architecture. A top of the pops if you will, of the images I find most interesting. Critique away. I have completely missed the entire DSLR 30+ year development, and have jumped from 35mm straight into digital mirrorless, a huge and steep learning curve, even leaving aside digital video software. So I'm learning, I'm open to advice. I'm sorting the photos out as I post..it kind of motivates me, even though reducing from 20Mb to 200kb to show them is kick in the teeth. It could take months, treat it like wallpaper that will just float around the bilge for a while.

My ex's family were farmers in the poor bit of NW South Africa. They (the parents) 'left' after their neighbours 'suggested' they were being 'too good' to their African estate workers. Bought land in NZ. Moved to the UK in the earliest sixties, stunned that could raise six kids on 20 acres in Devon compared to 300 near Namib.

Fascinating country. i was under the belief that it as German until recently, bot they were ousted by SA in WW1.

I mostly know about it because of the speed sailing record.

The first rule of finding diamonds, is that you DON'T TALK about finding diamonds. Quite the most fascinating and unexplored place I went to. Not wanting to get shot for stepping out of my car, eaten by hyenas or die of thirst in under an hour, I did not explore it much either. Thousands of square kilometers of desert and mountains owned by Namdeb, formally De Beers, that very few people have ever been into.

Really great photographs. My own response is just the opposite of CW's -- I find that terrain quite attractive. The light -- it's wonderful. I grew up photographing in a wet climate, California's North Coast. Wet days, just after the rains, gave me really great color saturation. But your "white" light is incredible.
