Southern Yellow Pine

I am rebuilding flooring (which will be covered) and seat boxes/frames on my 1928 Chris-Craft. Originally they seem to be SYP. Less expensive than mahogany and they hold up well. I am having a hard time sourcing SYP in greater Boston area. Any suggestions? Thanks wjtay6161@yahoo.com

You could give them a call and see what they have on hand. Not sure they are still doing it, but at least for a while, they were order over phone and pick up outside only due to pandemic.

(they are, more generally, a pretty good source for hardwood -- not in any way marine focused, but have, e.g., stuff like white oak, even quarter sawn when I was last in there).

Older SYP is tight grain. It was used as dividing walls in my school. I'd try a building salvage company.

Longleaf Lumber in Cambridge, right near Anderson McQuaid, specializes in reclaimed SYP flooring. They saw to order as well. Pricey.
Newport Nautical Timbers down in RI too, they saw to order, and have had large old SYP beams in the yard.

I know he had a large stash of it from a cotton barn that was taken down in Eufaula Alabama. Beautiful stuff. Old and very tight grained.
If you don’t need a huge amount of it might be cheaper from them even with shipping.

If you run into trouble - just know that SYP is not the only reasonable option for that application. Unless you are matching for looks, there are plenty of options. Douglas fir. Alaskan Yellow Cedar. Ipe. Teak. Mahogany or similar. And many more.

I wish we could trade. SYP everywhere you look. Doug fir, hard to find.
