Designers in the spirit of George Buehler?

The late George Buehler's designs largely brought together heavy, hard-chine, workboat construction techniques with a very traditional wooden boat style. He encouraged the use of plywood for decks and sometimes planking, but otherwise his designs would not have seemed out of place in a working boatyard a century or more ago.

What are some other designers, active or no longer with us, who would be a good source for similar designs? Note that I am not just looking for traditional-looking designs, but specifically heavy, rugged boats with workboat scantlings. Suitability for plywood planking would also be a plus.

Have you checked out my Venus Ketch , "Woodwind"?
I feel epoxy and strip planking made all of George Buelers construction techniques obsolete.

I found your thread, looks like a great boat and probably more than I would want to tackle, but I am not fond of working with epoxy so would want to minimize though probably not totally eliminate it.

Matthew, If your looking for a sizeable sailing boat for alongshore and offshore cruising thats planked in plywood with 'ease of construction' in mind designs that come to mind...

A. Whittholz Departure.




35ft. 27 ft LWL. 8 tons (a good displacement for offshore). 2 options on draft 4'3" or 5'. 3 rig options sloop, cutter or ketch. Inboard or outboard rudder. Aft or centre cockpit. Importantly the frame futtocks are straight white oak with simple plywood gussets. As are the deck knees. Floors are simple. It would be an easy boat to build. The ketch outboard rudder would be a great sea boat short handed. The plans are supposed to be very extensive and sold by Woodenboat. You can peruse the design in a feature in Boat Design Quarterly no.40.

B. John Welsford Sundowner.



This is a purposefully designed boat for short handed offshore work. She's enough beam to feel spacious beyond what you'd expect for her length. Again planked up over frames and stringers. You can see some diagonal planking going on with her.


C. Dudley Dix Cape Charles 32. A bit more inshore focus.




D. Laurent Giles Keyhaven Yawl. I think the planks are lapped. A bit more work. A bit more shape. Plans prob expensive.



E. Phil Bolger. He has quite a few.

You listed Ruel Parker .For me it was his "The New Cold-Molded Boatbuilding " that made Bueler's work seem obsolete .The list of designs in the back of the book would be a good start . I guess you've read that ? He draws from traditional designs . If you want to minimize epoxy use but not go traditional plank on frame I guess you need to look at the boats designed for sheet plywood on frame construction . It sounds like you're already thinking about that .The frames will logically be lighter than on old workboats .
