Scottish pot hauler plans?

I came across this reference in a copy of Thomas C. Gillmer's A History of Working Watercraft of the Western World from my local library. I really like the aft-pilothouse style in this relatively small boat. Does anyone know where I might find plans for a traditional one or a modern interpretation as a working boat or adapted as a pleasure cruiser? Google is turning up only modern boats or much larger boats in my searches. Cheers, Matthew

Most pre WWII Scottish boats descended from the drifters would come close... Loch Fyne springs to mind also.

I'm not sure if they were built as pot drifters initially... There must have been general purpose 26' ish boats around that were fitted with hauling capstans. I'd imagine most generic craft from that lication and time and length would be a good starting point.

Contact the Scottish Fisheries museum in Anstruther. They will help you. If they are closed, pm me.. I know some people in the town involved in historic boats and their rebuild.

Quite a few of the Scottish fishing boat builders sold versions of their boats as sturdy motor sailer cruisers after WW2. One of these was Millers, the builder of the boat in your post. Their yacht products were known as Miller Fifers, and they started from 26ft in length. Still quite a few of them around in the UK. Here is one example.........

i think it's considered to be based on a north sea type trawler,
but this is a really nice little motorsailer which was detailed in an old woodenboat magazine.

At the risk of blasphemy there have been conversions of Navy Whaleboats with similar setups.

Not blasphemy, a great idea, but the Navy whaleboats or similar types I have found for sale have either been as expensive as building new or in such a state that it would be even more work than building new.

Garden's 30ft x 10ft Bull Frog design would get you pretty close. It's featured in his book of Yacht Designs. A bit more keel than standard MFV's (need to) have though. Various cabins and rig option if you wanted to go sailing.



I think after all the MCA testing and the possibility of flooding from a large wave bow on (has happened) new inshore potters have to have a forward deck and wheelhouse commercially. In this regard I've always liked the Selway Fisher's Mylor. Strip planked (two layers) 27ft space for a big wide high torque old school prop and a full hairy arsed round bilge 8 tons design displacement. Proper old school inshore heavy voluminous fishing boat. Room for a nice big classic 8-10 litre 6cyl diesel down there and a level self draining deck. It would have alot of appeal to commerical fisherman on resale and a comfy ride round and about for pleasure use. Eminently buildable for a woodenboat builder looking for a change of life style.

Thanks, Ed, Garden's Bullfrog is lovely but less motor and more sailer than I had in mind. I'll take another look at the Selway-Fisher designs but it's really the aft pilothouse layout that captures my imagination.

Have you looked in to Edgar J March's books? He was one of the very few who realised this knowledge was disappearing forever, and dedicated his life to measuring every damn stick of every conceivable craft he could find, many many in Scotland. Invaluable today. I would suggest 'Inland craft', but you may also find some tasty morsels in 'Drifters', in which he drew many smaller near shore boats.

I have looked in March, and in Mkee. There is nothing there. March was more interested in sailing craft, and did not measure anything himself. The Chatam Directory also concentrated on sail as well.

So there you go Mathew.. you have keel timber arrangement, frame spacing, engine placement, strake number and a very good underwater shape to go on. I'm sure you can scale it up or down a few feet to suit you with impunity.
