Anyone available to look at a boat in Port Townsend, WA?

There's a boat in the yard at Point Hudson Marina that I'm interested in, and the price seems too good to be true, but I feel like I need to know. Would anyone in Port Townsend be able to take a look for me and give me a yea, take a look or nay, don't bother? It's a Rhodes Evergreen 36 named Tempest.

That if definitely the intent. I'm expecting the worst since the asking price is so low, but maybe it's a diamond in the rough. At which point I'll need a full survey for insurance, moorage, etc.

Sailed on E-11 Evergreen for a while a few decades ago. Beautiful fast boats if you don’t mind every bow wave coming into the cockpit while going upwind. Altho looking at that pic again, not sure that’s the same design. The house shape is different. Sorry I can’t get to Port Townsend to look for you.

The notes say that this one has a custom house. The one you sailed on probably looked more like this?

Yes. It was E-11 of I think 15. She was named Privateer at the time. An exciting boat to sail.

Yes Mick, an Evergreen is very much your style. Long, narrow, pointy and wet. And a 3/4 rig with a big powerful main.

I found a spy who works for the Shipwrights Co-op to to a quick visual on the boat yesterday. She's covered, but there's some visible varnish failure on the mast and other places and she had some concern about how the chainplates were fastened, but wasn't able to be more specific about what the concern was mostly because she didn't go inside the boat.

I found a bit more history too. Sounds like the restoration work was done at Friday Harbor around 2007 or 2008.

I'm going to try to run up there this weekend, hopefully with someone more knowledgeable than me.

I am glad that someone in Port Townsend went to check out the boat for you. She is looking very nice in the picture - very graceful lines.

Or make an appointment with a knowledgable friend and the owner to get the cover off and spend a day poking about, run the systems, at least look over the sails but a couple hours' sea trial with the owner would not be amiss.

(Your "spy" might not be good for this if she's locally employed as there could be conflict of interest issues you don't want to put her into. However there's nothing wrong with getting an estimate from a yard if you discover issues that feel beyond your ability.)

Different folk have different approaches. My own is to see if we can negotiate a price at this point "subject to survey" which means that we'd renegotiate for any survey discovered defects that would result in 5%? or 10% increase in the cost of ownership. The survey means the boat comes out of the water, some fastenings are pulled, and all that. Purchaser responsible for haul and relaunch, repair of pulled fastenings, and all that.

It might be. If I don't get snowed in, I'm going to try to take a look this weekend.

I've come to my senses. It's a beautiful boat, and hopefully worth saving for someone, but I don't have the resources to address the potential hidden and unknowable condition of the glassed hull. People have been telling me over and over to get a T-bird. I think those people are right.
