VHF question

I've got a decent but older VHF handheld. It used to reliably pick up weather startions. Now, nothing but static. I took it to the intercostal waterway and was able to pick up the weather but very weak signal.

Do these things drift off frequency? I suspect service is no an option. Any diy fix would be welcome. Thanks

I know that as capacitors age, reception on older radios gets weaker and weaker. Best guess would be that's your issue, but there are plenty of good options all over Amazon (This unit is $199 USD)which seems like a reasonable replacement.

No international. I've tried every combination I can think of. It's got a pretty simple interface.

Did you check with Cobra? Their customer support used to be pretty good.

It effed me up once. the on /off switch that operated by turning went in and out a wee bit...i had it the rong way and never knew it for weeks.I dint know it moved..dint know it was even a thing

Remove the antenna and blow the connection clean with canned air, or a compressor.

If there is a marine supply that will allow you, bring in your radio and ask to screw on a replacement antenna. See if that improves things. If neither of those things work, and as Bruce said you are on the right US/ INT switch position, it is probably time for a new radio.

Good question. It failed to work a couple of months ago also.
